Description
BRICKWORKS SAYS
Set within a handsome Victorian terrace on an historic cobbled street in Bethnal Green, this Grade II listed four-bedroom house has been forged with remarkable vision. The current owners bought the property as a shell and transformed it into a home inspired by Charleston Farmhouse — the Sussex home of painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. Bell, incidentally, was the owner’s great-grandmother, and the house wears that lineage lightly but with confidence: colour-drenched, playful, deeply considered.
The ground floor opens into the kitchen and dining room, with doors onto a private patio. Upstairs, the reception room enjoys leafy views across a preserved stretch of green that keeps the outlook unexpectedly pastoral for somewhere so deeply East London. While a bedroom and terrace sit quietly at the rear. The principal bedroom occupies the top floor, along with a walk-in wardrobe and bathroom. Two further bedrooms sit on the lower-ground; flexible spaces for guests, work or art-making.
The railway arches nearby house Mother Kelly’s, Fatto a Mano and Tempo, while the surrounding conservation area is rich with local landmarks, including Young V&A, York Hall and Bethnal Green Library. London Underground services at Bethnal Green are literally moments away.
THE OWNERS SAY
Living here has truly been paradise. Looking out the window at a sea of greenery everyday, waking up amongst the treetops, and watching the bluebells and blossom emerge on the green to the front, means that sometimes it feels like living in the countryside... But then you step out the door and are able to reach most of London within minutes. It’s an extraordinary life.
The only thing we love more than going out is staying at home. We have poured 10 years of love and creativity into making this the best possible home it can be. We are obsessed with food and cooking, and have built our dream, bespoke kitchen, and a cosy living room for pre- or post-dinner drinks. We host dinners and parties all the time, as our place is easy for everyone to get to.
We will miss it so much, and are so excited for it to have its next era.

Recent work:
The current owners purchased the property as a shell and carried out a comprehensive renovation, including the installation of new floors, stairs, windows, plumbing and electrics throughout. More recently, they have continued to improve the home with a new boiler, a new roof, a newly fitted kitchen, and secondary glazing to enhance both insulation and soundproofing. York stone front steps were also added, for which planning permission was granted in 2025.
Getting around:
It’s hard to top the location for ease of travel: Bethnal Green (Central line, Zone 2) is set just across the street, less than a minute’s walk from the front door. The Overground is also just a short walk away when you need it, and the area’s cycling infrastructure connects to London’s Cycleways. Multiple bus routes run through here too, including the National Express to Stansted Airport.
Schools:
Families are well served by a number of popular local schools, including St John the Baptist Voluntary Aided COE Primary School and Hague Primary School, both of which are well regarded locally for their strong community feel and supportive learning environments. For older students, Morpeth School has a particularly strong local reputation, known for its inclusive ethos, creative focus and popular sixth form.
Onward plans:
The current owners are moving to be nearer family. They may be able to sell chain-free.
Anything else:
The current owners have secured planning permission for an additional storey and arranged for a specialist heritage assessment, which can be shared on request. As part of that assessment, it suggests there would be no issues in creating a large terrace at the back of the property to increase the outdoor space. Neither Brickworks nor the owners can give any guarantees, but we will gladly share the information we have to hand, as it presents an interesting opportunity.
