Description

A two-bedroom Victorian cottage on Cambridge Cottages, a small terrace of white-painted houses just off Kew Green and within the Kew Green conservation area. The Thames towpath is a few minutes from the front door, and the Royal Botanic Gardens are a short walk away. The terrace shares its name with Cambridge Cottage, the early 19th-century royal residence on Kew Green that was home to the Duke of Cambridge until 1904, when it passed to the Royal Botanic Gardens.

The façade is painted brick, with a soft blue-green front door set within an arched surround. Inside, the palette is reduced to a single quiet register: walls and joinery in soft white, stripped pine boards running across the ground floor, a white marble chimneypiece with a cast-iron grate and brass fender in working order. Alcove shelving and a cupboard sit either side of the chimney breast.

The ground floor runs in a sequence from front to back: a drawing room at the front, a dining room behind it lit from above by a glazed pyramid rooflight, and a small kitchen beyond, opening through French doors to the garden. Upstairs, two bedrooms of similar proportion sit either side of the landing, each with fitted cupboards and sash windows. The bathroom is at the rear, in a traditional suite against blue and white patterned tile. Above, a fully lined loft is accessed from the landing, with scope for conversion subject to the usual consents.

The garden is a small paved courtyard enclosed by an old brick wall, with mature climbing growth along its boundaries and space for a table and pots. Beyond, Kew Green itself, with its cricket ground, St Anne's Church and the low Georgian and Victorian terraces around its perimeter, is the anchor of the immediate area. Kew Bridge Overground and Kew Gardens Underground provide services into central London.
