Description

This serene five-bedroom home lies in St Margaret’s at Cliffe, Kent, a village forming part of the designated South Foreland Heritage Coast. Surrounded by arresting views of the countryside and the sea beyond, the house has two versatile living areas, alongside a series of light-filled bedrooms with bucolic views. A large paved terrace is perfect for sitting out, while carefully maintained lawns look onto the fields and farmland beyond. The seaside town of Deal is less than a 20-minute drive away, and the Dover ferry port is also close by.

The Tour

A large gravelled driveway with a detached double garage sits at the front of the house. A flight of steps framed by neat hedging descends to the front door. Inside, a wide entrance hall leads to a vast living room with sliding doors and far-reaching views across the landscape. A log burner with tiled hearth is perfect for hunkering down on cooler evenings.

In the kitchen, red quarry tiles run underfoot, while a wide window fills the space with natural light. Appliances include a Stoves range cooker. A second sitting room on the opposite side of the house has further opportunities for enjoying the views via glazed sliding doors, with glimpses of the sea. In one corner, a log burner has exposed chrome pipework, while a kitchenette is installed to one side.

There are five bright bedrooms, each with mesmerising views of the surrounding countryside and the sea beyond. The principal has full-height fitted storage and an en suite shower room. The house has two additional bathrooms (one with a shower, one with a bathtub) and a guest WC.

A timber-framed shepherd’s hut provides additional accommodation, and has its own shower room.

Outdoor Space

The house is surrounded by a lawn, framed by neat hedging. A large paved terrace has views of the surrounding countryside, with the sea visible in the distance. A vegetable patch, a shed and a greenhouse are perfect for green-fingered gardeners, while a brick-built pill box has inscriptions from years gone by.

The Area

The house lies in St Margaret’s at Cliffe, in a tranquil spot on top of mesmerising white cliffs. Surrounded by open farmland, the village’s centre is a 1-minute drive from the house and well served by essential amenities. Deal and Dover are both a short drive away, providing a multitude of places to eat and shop.

The house's position within Kent Downs National Landscape (formerly known as AONB) encompassing the South Foreland Coast National Trust managed land, provides a wealth of walking routes. The national cycle route is right on the doorstep.

The centre of Deal can be reached in 17 minutes by car, or by a connecting coastal footpath overlooking the English Channel. The town is well known for its culinary scene: The Rose Hotel is known for its excellent bar and food, and has a sister restaurant, The Blue Pelican. Merchant of Relish, The Black Pig and Jenkins and Sons are the go-to for groceries, meat and fish respectively. For local produce, there is also a fantastic Saturday farmers’ market. The popular Updown farmhouse lies a few miles inland and serves modern European cuisine in a 17th-century former farmstead.

There are several schools in the area, including the local St Margaret’s at Cliffe Primary School, and Kingsdown and Ringwould Church of England Primary School. Also nearby are Dover Grammar School for Girls, Dover Grammar School for Boys, and St Edmund’s Catholic School.

London can be reached in just over two hours by car. The closest railway station is Martin Mill, a six-minute drive away which runs a high speed service. From here, connections can be made to London in as little as an hour and 17 minutes. Dover ferry port is six miles from the house, with links to the continent.
