Description

Lower Drayton is a Grade II listed farmhouse with parts dating back to the 14th century, later added to during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. The house has been in the same ownership for the past 35 years and has been carefully maintained in a way that respects its age and character, without trying to over-restore or modernise it beyond recognition.

Built of stone and brick beneath tiled roofs, the house sits within open South Shropshire countryside alongside a collection of traditional outbuildings, gardens and orchard areas. Over the years the land and gardens have been managed organically, without the use of pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilisers. Orchard planting includes perry pear, cider and sweet apple trees, together with damsons and medlar.

The house itself retains a great deal of original character. Exposed beams, uneven timbers, deep-set windows, old doors and flagstone floors remain throughout much of the building, reflecting the different periods in which the house evolved.

The kitchen is a large, practical room centred around an oil-fired Aga set within the original fireplace. Heavy ceiling beams and simple fitted cabinetry give the room a straightforward, traditional feel. The adjoining utility room contains the central heating boiler, introduced by the current owners, and the original Victorian kitchen range has been uncovered once again within the old fireplace opening.

The two principal reception rooms are both generous in size and used as everyday living spaces rather than formal rooms. The current sitting room was formerly the drawing room and now has a Clearview wood-burning stove set within the fireplace. The dining room, previously used as the sitting room, also contains a Clearview stove. Both rooms have a calm, lived-in feel and look out across the surrounding gardens and countryside. There is also a small office/study on the ground floor, while the former study has been adapted into a shower room.

Upstairs are five bedrooms arranged around a central landing, together with a large family bathroom. The rooms continue the character seen downstairs, with exposed timbers, old floorboards and views over the surrounding landscape. The attic rooms provide further useful space and have evolved over time, with one former bedroom now incorporated into the attic accommodation.

The outbuildings remain an important part of the property and include a granary, cider barn, sheds and further traditional buildings. They are largely unchanged in character and provide useful storage and workshop space, continuing the agricultural feel of the setting.
