MUNICIPALITY OF VETOVO
The Municipality of Vetovo is located in Northern Bulgaria and is one of the constituent municipalities of Ruse Province. It lies in the eastern part of the province, on the border with Razgrad Province, and covers an area of approximately 363 km². The municipality occupies parts of the western Ludogorie region and the Danubian Plain, with a landscape of rolling hills, river valleys and limestone formations.
The municipality includes 6 settlements: the town of Vetovo (municipal centre), the towns of Senovo and Glodjevo, and the villages of Pisanets, Krivnya and Smirnenski. The total population is around 10,000 people, with a diverse ethnic and religious composition and a long tradition of peaceful coexistence.
The economy is based mainly on agriculture and mineral extraction. The region is particularly important for the extraction and processing of kaolin and quartz sand, especially around Senovo, which supplies raw materials for the glass and ceramics industries. Agriculture is also well developed, with grain crops such as wheat, corn and sunflower, as well as beekeeping and livestock farming.
The municipality has a varied transport network, with road connections linking it to Ruse, Razgrad, Kubrat and Ivanovo. Several republican roads pass through the territory, providing access to regional centres and the national road system. The railway line Ruse-Varna also crosses the wider region, supporting passenger and freight transport.
The relief of Vetovo Municipality is predominantly hilly, with elevations ranging from about 100 to over 400 metres. The lowest areas are along the Beli Lom River valley, while the highest points are located in the southeastern parts near Senovo. The river valleys are deeply cut and form dramatic canyon-like landscapes, especially in the southern parts of the municipality.
The region is rich in rivers, forests and protected natural areas. The Beli Lom River, a right tributary of the Rusenski Lom, shapes much of the landscape with steep cliffs, meanders and rock formations. The area is known for its biodiversity and clean natural environment.
Historically, the territory has been inhabited since antiquity. Archaeological findings confirm the presence of Thracian, Roman and medieval settlements. The most significant remains include hilltop fortifications, rock dwellings and monastery complexes carved into the limestone cliffs.
In the territory of Krivnya, the remains of the ancient fortress known as Sin Grad (also associated with the Kaleto site) have been identified. The site contains preserved walls, pottery fragments and traces of Roman and Byzantine occupation, as well as early Christian church foundations.
