Exquisitely styled Bedford Park home with spectacular family space.

Description

Set behind charming, nostalgic picket fencing, this beautiful semi detached Bedford Park home has been thoughtfully and impeccably reconfigured to create exceptional living and entertaining spaces across the ground and lower ground floors, complemented by generous family accommodation above.

From the moment you step inside, the house sets a warm and welcoming tone. An inviting entrance hallway leads to a striking panelled family room to the front, filled with natural light from the bay window and enhanced by elegant parquet flooring. To the rear, the property truly comes into its own. The extended kitchen, dining and family room is designed for modern living, featuring bespoke cabinetry, a vaulted ceiling and extensive glazing that floods the space with natural light. Bifold doors open seamlessly onto a private garden, bordered by mature planting and finished with an artificial lawn for year round enjoyment. Homes in Bedford Park rarely benefit from basement extensions, making the lower ground floor particularly special.

Created with great attention to detail, it offers impressive ceiling heights, a stylish office or guest bedroom with lightwell, a beautiful shower room, and an additional living space with bespoke shelving and a cinema screen. The upper floors provide excellent accommodation, including a principal bedroom with en suite, spacious bedrooms and a top floor suite with its own bathroom.

Location

Bedford Park is one of Chiswick’s most distinctive and architecturally significant residential areas in West London. Created around 1875 under the direction of Jonathan Carr, it is renowned for its Queen Anne Revival architecture, with large houses designed by Norman Shaw alongside notable contributions from Edward William Godwin, Edward John May, Henry Wilson and Maurice Bingham Adams. The streetscape is characterised by rich red brickwork and an eclectic range of decorative details, including tile-hung façades, gables, balconies, bay windows, terracotta and rubbed brickwork, ornate chimneys and white-painted balustrades.

At the heart of the estate, the main roads converge around several landmark buildings, including St Michael and All Angels Church; the former Bedford Park Club, now the London Buddhist Vihara; The Tabard Inn and historic Bedford Park Stores; and the former Chiswick School of Art, now the Arts Educational Schools. Often described as the world’s first garden suburb, Bedford Park established a new model of informal, village-style living that was widely emulated. The area became highly fashionable in the 1880s and attracted a creative and literary community including W. B. Yeats, Florence Farr, Arthur Wing Pinero, William Terriss and the painter Camille Pissarro. Bedford Park also featured in the writings of G. K. Chesterton and John Buchan, while receiving affectionate satire in the St James’s Gazette. Today, it is protected by conservation areas within the London Boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow, with more than 350 Grade II listed buildings and the church and inn awarded Grade II* status. Historian Stephen Inwood has described it as “probably the best garden suburb in London”.

Chiswick lies approximately eight miles west of Central London and is prized for its village atmosphere, leafy streets and riverside setting. The area combines period housing and generous green space with excellent transport connections, offering easy access to Central London and Heathrow Airport. It is particularly popular with families, aided by proximity to well-regarded schools such as Orchard House, Latymer Prep and Upper School, Ravenscourt Prep and Heathfield House.

Chiswick High Road forms the lively commercial heart of the neighbourhood, linking Turnham Green Terrace and Devonshire Road, both known for independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Weekend markets add to the local buzz, while cultural attractions include The Chiswick Cinema and Chiswick Playhouse. Dining options range from long-established favourites such as La Trompette and Le Vacherin to newer arrivals including Indian Republic, with popular social hubs such as High Road Brasserie and Megan’s at The Flower Market.
