It is a very short drive to the beautiful medieval town of Casalvieri, and to many other attractive historic hilltop towns. CASALVIERI AND THE CIOCIARIA

Casalevieri lies at the entrance of the wild gorges of the Melfa river, on the eastern side of the Val di Comino; a peaceful historic town whose name derives from the ancient term of "Domus Olivieri". The medieval centre is composed of buildings finely decorated with stone windows and portals, such as the eighteenth-century Palazzo Cellitto; it hosts wonderful festivals on such occasions as the celebrations of the patron saint on the last Sunday of May. The church of SS. Giovanni Battista and Evangelista, whose baroque façade is enriched by two niches with statues: "L'Assunta", painted by Cavalier d 'Arpino and the sacristy with fine wooden sculptures, are of particular merit. The seventeenth-century church of S. Maria delle Rose, in the Roselli district, is very elegant.

The Ciociaria region of Italy is within easy reach of both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day's shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter drive brings you to the charming beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await with horse trekking in the magnificent beech forests, and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can swim in the heat of the summer. And at the other extreme of temperature, although Casa Roselli / Casalvieri is in a temperate zone, less than an hour's drive brings you to the winter ski slopes.

Often overlooked, both by tourists and by those foreigners in search of an Italian home, in favour of the more publicised regions of Tuscany and Umbria, the Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt gem with beautiful scenery and medieval hilltop towns.
