Description
The Building
Brookfield Court was designed by Hugh Hubbard Ford in 1935. Its grand and sweeping exterior exemplifies the energy of the period and was designed to offer ‘all the conveniences of modern construction, comfort, light and air.’ The building is characterised by a smart white façade with gently curved walls, and light-filled interiors.
The Tour
This apartment lies on the third floor of the building. A bright entrance hall leads to a light-filled living and dining room. The space is illuminated by glazing on three sides, with far-reaching views across the rooftops towards the sea. A log burner sits in an alcove, and original doors remain in situ throughout the apartment.
In the kitchen, original cabinetry provides ample storage space, and appliances include an induction hob, oven and a wine fridge. Cork flooring runs underfoot here and in the bathroom.
Two well-appointed double bedrooms each have leafy views of the treetops beyond. One has a gently curved alcove, while the other has two fitted storage cupboards. In the bathroom there is a washbasin and a bathtub, while a separate WC sits adjacent.
Residents of the building have access to a communal rooftop solarium with panoramic views of the coastline.
The Area
This apartment lies moments from the seafront in Bexhill-on-Sea, one of Sussex’s most popular seaside towns. A short walk along the coastal path leads to the De La Warr Pavilion, one of Britain’s most celebrated modernist buildings. Built in 1935 by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, the pavilion is an internationally renowned arts centre with an impressive programme of exhibitions, performances and events.
Hastings is a 20-minute drive away; its Old Town is full of antique markets and independent retailers too. Some of the most respected are Made in Hastings, AG Hendy & Co, Warp and Weft, Hastings Antique Centre and Ode Interiors. Art galleries are likewise abundant. The most significant is Hastings Contemporary by HAT Projects. Others of note include The Rebel Gallery and Lucy Bell Fine Art. The popular town of St Leonards-on-Sea is also close by, with Rye and Lewes also within easy driving distance. For walks in nature, the wonderful South Downs National Park is less than a 30-minute drive away.
Bexhill rail station is a 14-minute walk away, and runs direct services to London Victoria in around two hours.
