Description
This first floor apartment is set at the end of the East Wing of this fine regency villa. The apartment consists of a hallway which leads to the grand reception room. At twenty feet by eighteen feet with three tall sash windows and working shutters, this is the epitome of Cheltenham living. There are beautiful cornice details on the ceiling and the current owner has upgraded the heating system with detailed period radiators. Off the living room is a stylish kitchen which also has a tall sash overlooking the green and has some clever high level storage which goes over the hallway. There is also additional storage in the hall itself. The bedroom at the opposite end of the hallway has two built in double wardrobes a feature fireplace and again the grand sash window with working shutters. These windows are not just beautiful to look at but flood the space with natural light making this a very happy home to be in. There is a modern bathroom suite next to the bedroom off the hallway serving the apartment.
THE BUILDING
Montpellier House is one of Cheltenham's finest examples of regency architecture and retains period features both externally and internally, including the open-well staircase with iron balustrade with lozenge and oval motif and wreathed handrail as well as Marble fireplaces. The unusually high ceilings and beautiful mouldings make this a classic Grade II listed period home of exceptional elegance. The property has ashlar stone facing and classic portico. The property was built around 1832 by the architect Edward Jenkins. It is notable also for its historical links to the famous architect Sir Robert Smirke who lived in Montpellier House from 1859 until his death in 1867 and was responsible for designing many famous classical buildings including the main block and façade of the British Museum.
Suffolk Square occupies land bought by the Earl of Suffolk from the de la Bere's, on which he built his own residence, with his daughter later selling the land to Edward Jenkins. The square now has Cheltenham Bowling Club (founded 1883) in its centre and the array of shops, boutiques and café's of The Suffolks on its doorstep.
The property is Freehold, Grade II listed and in Conservation Area (CP HE3)
