Situation
Mecknoch is situated on the west side of the Isle of Bute. Calmac operates a frequent ferry service to Wemyss Bay which has a direct rail link to Glasgow. A second, smaller ferry runs from Rhubodach to Colintraive on the Cowal Peninsula giving access to the Highlands and Islands and beyond. Glasgow airport is around 40 minutes’ and Prestwick Airport around 50 minutes’ drive from Wemyss Bay.
Leisure
Rothesay has an 18 hole golf course and there are two smaller courses at Kingarth on the west side and Port Bannatyne to the north. The West Island Way is a well-maintained and sign-posted route from one end of the island to the other, allowing walkers to immerse themselves in the picturesque and varied landscape of the island. There is a large community forest at the north end of the island taking in coniferous and deciduous woodland with stunning views and fascinating history. Bute has several beautiful sandy beaches for swimming and paddleboarding as well as a varied and interesting coastline. There are opportunities for fresh water and sea angling and stalking. Bute has various associations covering interests in sport, nature, history, music and art.
Sailing/Watersports
The waters around Bute, including The Kyles of Bute which is a designated National Scenic Area, host lively sailing activity throughout the season. There are sheltered moorings, marinas and boating services in Port Bannatyne and Rothesay. The Isle of Bute Seasports Club offers sailing, skiff rowing and wild swimming opportunities.
