Description

Designed by Rose Uniacke, this serene apartment lies on the ground floor of a converted Victorian school in Peckham. Tall period windows draw in beautiful natural light, highlighting the soaring ceiling heights and rich roster of Rose Uniacke-brand paint shades applied throughout.

The Tour

Formerly Leo Street School, Grenier Apartments was built in 1899 to a design by architect TJ Bailey and was converted into apartments in the late 1990s. At the rear is designated and gated parking, and the apartment is reached via characterful communal spaces.

The heart of this home is a wonderful open-plan living space, where restored original parquet runs underfoot and windows on two aspects welcome in plenty of brightness. A sitting area is arranged at one end, oriented towards a tall, wall-to-wall window. Behind is the kitchen and dining area, which has sleek cabinetry, stained-oak worktops and brand new integrated appliances, including an oven and fridge. There is a wonderful flexibility to this spacious room, making it adaptable to various lifestyles.

Next door, the bedroom is also of a generous size and has the same original parquet floors as the living room. Another large window imbues the room with a soft glow. Opposite is the bathroom, a charming space with diamond terracotta floor tiles and white wall tiles, the latter cleverly offset by terracotta-coloured grout.

Outdoor Space

The block has a communal courtyard garden with picnic tables, barbecue space and green climbers. There is also secure bike storage within the gated parking area.

The Area

Grenier Apartments is brilliantly located. The centre of Peckham is close by, as is the Surrey Canal Path, a beautiful strip of woodland that connects to Burgess Park in the north with Peckham Square in the south.

Persian restaurant Persepolis is a local favourite, along with The Begging Bowl. Queens Road is home to Blackbird Bakery, which sits tucked under the railway arches, Peckham Cellars, Mama Dough’s pizza restaurant, and several new independent bars. We’ve written more about Peckham in our residents’ guide.

Queens Road Peckham is the nearest station, just a nine-minute walk away. It runs Overground (Windrush line) services north to Shoreditch High Street, Dalston Junction and Highbury and Islington, or Clapham Junction in the south. Southern trains run to London Bridge in around seven minutes. There are excellent bus connections from the Old Kent Road, just two minutes away, that go towards Elephant and Castle and the City.

Industry affiliations:

The Modern House is an estate agency that helps people live in more thoughtful and beautiful ways. We have been successfully selling Britain's finest modern architecture since 2005, representing design-led homes throughout the UK from our offices in central London.

The Modern House meets the growing demand for exceptional living spaces of all kinds, including flats, lofts, conversions, architects' own homes, new builds and period houses. Our name is inspired by FRS Yorke's celebrated book 'The Modern House' (1934), which introduced modernist architecture to a British audience.

We are excited by homes that pay attention to the timeless principles of modernism: space, light, materials, nature and decoration. Combined, we believe design can be a powerful force for good.
