Description
Description
Crown House is listed Grade II and thought to have 17th century origins with rendered, rubble stone walls under a pitched roof. The front door opens into a lovely spacious hallway, where stairs rise to the first floor and a glazed door provides access to the rear terrace. From the hallway is access to an attractive sitting room with inglenook fireplace and wood burning stove, exposed ceiling beams and double doors to the terrace. Across the hall is a dining room also with fireplace, stripped wood floor and exposed beam. A door from here leads into a good size kitchen, with an excellent range of units and an AGA range. A rear hall provides access to a spacious utility or laundry room with a larder cupboard. To the rear of the house is a further area ideal as a boot room with a WC and access to the garden. Steps from here lead up to a lovely timber conservatory, with delightful views of the garden. On the first floor is a good size principal bedroom with vaulted ceiling and en suite shower room. A spacious landing provides for a first floor sitting room or study area, possibly an occasional sleeping area for children. There are three further double bedrooms and a bathroom. Large accessible part boarded loft space over the length of the house ideal for storage.
Outside
The gardens at Crown House are situated to the rear of the property and face in a southerly direction. Immediately to the rear of the house is a large terrace enclosed by a dwarf stone wall, and the house, creating a sheltered courtyard, with access from both the hall and the sitting room. A shrub border with adjacent steps lead up to a gently sloping lawn interspersed with beds and borders full of colour and some attractive specimen trees. A pretty wooden summer house sits off to one side. A path to the west of the garden winds its way to the top of this gently sloping space, with a small terrace and a bench providing a view point over the roof tops to the countryside and church beyond. From the top of the garden there is access to a recently installed timber double garage with power and light. Beyond the garage is an area of hard standing suitable for two cars. Double gates open out onto Back Lane.
Location
Cerne Abbas is undoubtedly one of the most attractive and thriving villages in this wonderful county and located in a designated National Landscape where the glorious surrounding countryside has changed little in centuries.
The village lies to the south of the historic Abbey town of Sherborne and to the north of the County town of Dorchester.
The village is renowned for its charm and character, the centre being predominantly made up with period properties, but is also well known for its famous Giant, a 180 ft high ancient chalk figure carved into the steep sloping hillside above the village and now managed by the National Trust.
The village has a vibrant community and is immensely popular for its unusually large range of facilities which include a thriving village shop and Post Office, three public houses, a first school, and doctors surgery, the fine parish Church of St Mary and a medieval abbey.
Sherborne and Dorchester are within easy driving distance, both having a further wide range of facilities including independent and national shop chains, supermarkets including Waitrose, pubs, restaurants and both with mainline railway services to London Waterloo.
Further to the south at Weymouth is the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO world heritage site with its glorious South West Coastal path, water sports from the marina and the national sailing academy at Portland. Other sporting facilities in the area include golf at Sherborne and Dorchester and horseracing at Wincanton, Taunton and Salisbury.
Education
There are good schools in the area both state and private. State primary school in the village, Dorchester Middle School, Thomas Hardye School. The county is well served by private schools too, with preparatory schools at Sunninghill school in Dorchester, Sherborne, Sandroyd, Perrott Hill. Senior schools include Sherborne School for boys; Sherborne School for girls, Leweston, Bryanston, Canford, and Milton Abbey.
