Sellers Insight
“We moved into The Lincoln Club House ten years ago as our very first home together, and it has been a wonderful place to call home ever since. Having stood derelict for around forty years, the property was sympathetically restored by the developer, who carefully balanced modern comforts such as underfloor heating and updated electrics with the character and charm that first drew us to it. We have always tried to continue that approach, preserving its history whilst enjoying the comfort of modern living.
The house has a wonderful atmosphere. The high ceilings and large windows create a real sense of light and space, whilst the thoughtful renovation means it remains cosy during the winter months and pleasantly cool in the summer. The outdoor spaces have been equally enjoyable. We have spent many evenings entertaining friends and family on the decked terrace, enjoying long summer evenings overlooking the garden, whilst the patio catches the morning sun and provides the perfect spot to start the day with a cup of tea.
Our little neighbourhood has a friendly and welcoming feel, the layout ensures each property retains a real sense of privacy. The garden has been a particular joy, offering a secure environment for dogs and grandchildren alike and, if you ask my husband, the perfect excuse to spend an afternoon on the sit-on mower.
Built in 1741, The Lincoln Club House has a fascinating history. Originally forming part of the Coaching House Inn, an important stop on the London-to-York route, it later became associated with the exclusive Lincoln Club, from which the property takes its name. One of our favourite stories concerns a series of bust-style plaques once displayed throughout the downstairs rooms by members of the club. During a later period when the building was used as a courthouse and soldiers' guardhouse, the occupying soldiers reportedly expressed their feelings towards the local aristocracy by shooting every one of them. Remarkably, a single surviving plaque was discovered centuries later behind a false ceiling and has since been restored and rehung as a tangible reminder of the building's colourful past.”
