The property, formerly known as The Black Bull Inn, occupies an important place within the history of the village of Newchurch on Romney Marsh. Believed to date in part from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, the building served for generations as one of the village’s principal public houses and social meeting places. Historic records within the accompanying research suggest that the inn may have earlier origins as a coaching or ale house, reflecting Newchurch’s historic role as a small but active rural settlement on Romney Marsh.
Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, The Black Bull was closely woven into village life. A long succession of innkeepers is recorded from the early 1700s onwards, including the Jarrett, Castle, Collyer, Ovenden, Fancett and Smith families, many of whom also farmed locally. The inn changed names on several occasions during this period, including references to “The Bell” and “The Shepherd & Lamb”, before ultimately becoming known as The Black Bull.
The property appears frequently in local records, licensing documents and census returns. By the mid-nineteenth century it was established as a thriving inn serving both villagers and travellers crossing Romney Marsh. At various points the inn hosted court hearings, coroners’ inquests and local meetings, demonstrating its importance as one of the few communal gathering places in the area. The surviving records paint a vivid picture of rural life during this period, with accounts of local labourers, marsh workers and travelling people all connected in some way to the inn and surrounding settlement.
The Black Bull also became well known locally for its connection with rural traditions, particularly shooting and coursing. Mid-twentieth-century articles describe the inn as a characterful and unspoilt country pub with low-beamed interiors, old quarry-tiled floors, oak settles and open fireplaces. Contemporary descriptions mention that beer was still drawn directly from the wood and refer to unusual original features including spirit jars bearing the Royal Arms and antique bar fittings. The pub attracted visitors from across Romney Marsh and became especially popular with members of local coursing clubs and nearby airmen during the Second World War.
A number of historic photographs contained within the archive illustrate the evolution of the building and its setting over more than a century. Images from the early 1900s through to the 1980s show the inn at the heart of village gatherings, frequently pictured with groups of local residents, sportsmen and their dogs assembled outside the front elevation. Later photographs document the gradual transition of the property away from public house use and into private residential occupation.
The building is noted as Grade II listed, recognised for its historic and architectural significance. Listing descriptions refer to its painted brick elevations, plain tiled roof and traditional sash windows, all contributing to its enduring vernacular character. Historic commentary also suggests that portions of the structure may incorporate earlier materials, including reputed ship’s timbers, adding further intrigue to its long history.
Although no longer operating as a public house, the property remains an important and much-admired part of Newchurch’s heritage. Its long association with village life, together with the survival of many original features and the wealth of historical documentation connected to it, make it a fascinating and characterful home with a rich and varied past.
