The magic history of 40 Carrington Road -
The connection between Harry Houdini and Randolph Osborne Douglas is a genuine piece of Sheffield magic history, although some of the more dramatic claims have become embellished over time. Randini was the stage name of Randolph Osborne Douglas (1895–1956), a Sheffield-born silversmith, artist, lock expert, and amateur escapologist. He grew up in the Endcliffe area of Sheffield and became fascinated with Houdini as a boy after seeing him perform at the Sheffield Empire Theatre.
Over time, Douglas developed his own escape acts under the name "The Great Randini" and began corresponding with Houdini. Surviving letters suggest their relationship evolved beyond mere fan and celebrity; Douglas became a trusted correspondent who shared ideas for escapes and stage effects.
Several sources state that Randini helped inspire or develop Houdini's famous upside-down straitjacket escape, one of the illusionist's signature stunts.
40 Carrington Road, S11, is where Randini had his lodgings within the attic space with his landlady Ann. It is thought many escape tricks were believed to have been developed in this room using the rafters and beams.
A fascinating book- “Randini- the man who helped Houdini” by Ann Beedham, delves into this exciting history and shows letters and postcards addressed to Randini at 40 Carrington Road from the great escapologist himself. It is even suggested that Houdini visited Randini on several occasions and worked on their magic acts together.
