Description
Established in Clerkenwell in 1809, J. & W. Nicholson Gin Distillery was one of the world's oldest and most historically significant gin producers.
The company played a pivotal role in pioneering the classic London Dry Gin style and became a cultural and economic powerhouse in Victorian London.
The building's distinctive façade dates from 1828, and the site was sensitively converted into apartments in the late 1990’s, incorporating courtyard buildings, underground parking, beautifully maintained communal gardens and a day porter.
This top-floor apartment (with lift access) forms part of this unique development, one of Clerkenwell's most important surviving industrial landmarks. The building's façade was granted Grade II listed status in 1972, recognising its architectural and historical significance.
Occupying a position within the original section of the building, the apartment enjoys a top-floor setting with impressive dual-aspect views across the surrounding area.
The accommodation comprises a large reception room, recently refitted separate kitchen, two generous double bedrooms and bathroom. The apartment also benefits from a secure underground parking space, communal gardens and a day porter.
Located on St John Street close to the junction of Clerkenwell Road it is in the most favoured part of the street with Waitrose a minutes’ walk away and a short walk from Farringdon Underground and Mainline Station with access to the Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith and City lines, National rail and the Elizabeth Line. In fact, it is one of the only stations in London that offers north-south as well as east–west connections, making the city, Canary Wharf and London's west end easily accessible, not to mention convenient access to Kings Cross St Pancras with its Eurostar terminus.
The London Museum’s relocation to the Southern end of the abandoned Smithfield Market is underway, receiving a £180m by the City and London Mayor, with the first phase now planned to open at the end of 2026 creating new gallery space as well as options for larger events and exhibitions.
In April this year, further exciting news was announced that subject to planning approval, will see the redevelopment of ‘The Annexe buildings’ in West Smithfield. This new chapter for the building will see the introduction of a new food market, establishing Smithfield as a new London destination for food, culture and public life revitalising this remarkable corner of London.
