Description
The Border Esk rises in the southern uplands of Scotland forming part of the Scottish-English border before flowing onwards through Cumbria to the Solway Firth. It is reputed as one of the finest small salmon rivers in the south of Scotland, fed from key tributaries such as the White Esk, Black Esk and Liddel Water, creating a varied system of streams, runs and pools well suited to both salmon and sea trout fishing. The River is managed by the Environment Agency (England) who encourage progressive stewardship to ensure the long term health and quality of the river. Angling is encouraged predominantly by fly, particularly in higher and medium water, although spinning is permitted in higher flows and early season conditions. There is a catch and release policy for salmon while sea trout can be retained within a limit of 4 per season per angler.
The Beats
The Willow and Cauldron beats start just north of the confluence between the River Esk and the Liddel Water and run for approximately 1,330m south to the Scotland/England border near Scotsdike. There are 12 named pools along the beat as shown on the map opposite, with single bank fishing from the western bank. There is a small stretch of double bank fishing at the top of the Willow Beat, however the eastern bank has no right of access and can only be reached by wading across the river at this point. The beats generally accommodate a maximum of three rods each (six in total). There are 4 fishing huts spaced out along the beats.
Access
There is vehicular access along a small farm track from the B7201 arriving close to the midpoint of the beat, where there is limited parking and two fishing huts. Additional pedestrian access on the riverbank is shown hatched on the sale plan.
Season
The salmon season runs from 1st April to 31st October and sea trout from 1st April to 31st August.
Catch Records: Available in brochure.
Annual Levy
The River Esk is under the control of the Environment Agency in England (being a cross border watercourse). The Seller advises that no levy is currently payable on the fishings however anglers must purchase a rod fishing licence to avoid incurring a fine, see
