Ewelme is one of those villages that has quietly held onto itself. The brook still runs along the village street from the spring that gave the place its name and past the watercress beds. The Almshouses, Church and Schoolroom, built in the 1430s by Geoffrey Chaucer’s granddaughter, are still standing and still in use. It is a village with real depth; close enough to Wallingford to be practical and far enough into the hills to feel away from things.
