Description

Shelley Cottage is a charming three storey town house, forming part of a larger historic Grade II Listed building. The site is believed to have originally been occupied by a late 16th century home, rebuilt in the 18th century as one large town house. Early in the 19th century, the literary greats Mary Shelley and Percy Shelley purchased the home, where Mary penned her masterpiece Frankenstein. They moved from the property in 1818 and at some point afterward the property was split into four homes that remain in place today. The properties are particularly handsome in architecture, with a tall flat façade interspersed with covered storm porches. Ornate detail to the window openings and frames, along with an attractive roofline, provide architectural interest.

Arranged over three floors and extending to approximately 1,177 sq ft, the cottage offers characterful and well-proportioned accommodation throughout. The ground floor comprises a welcoming sitting room overlooking historic West Street, an inner hallway with cloakroom, and a bright kitchen/dining room featuring a vaulted ceiling and direct access to the rear garden, creating an excellent space for both everyday living and entertaining.

The upper floors provide three bedrooms, including two generous doubles and a further single bedroom ideal as a study or guest room, all served by a spacious family bathroom.

Outside, the enclosed rear garden has been thoughtfully landscaped with attractive decking, providing a private and low-maintenance space for outdoor dining and entertaining throughout the seasons. A substantial timber outbuilding to the rear offers excellent storage or potential for a variety of uses.

Marlow town offers a superb range of retailers, there are numerous bars, cafes and restaurants dotted around the town offering destinations for any occasion. The town itself is situated on the banks of the River Thames and the Thames Path follows the river through the town. For commuters, the town has a train station to Paddington (via Maidenhead) and the M40 and M4 motorways are accessed from the A404(M) which passes the town, London Heathrow is approximately 22 miles away. A comprehensive range of private and state schooling options, both primary and secondary, in the area include Danesfield, Spinfield and Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School which is just 100 metres along the Street.
