Description
Barnstaple is the principal market town of North Devon, with roots dating back to Saxon times, and is recorded in documents as early as the 10th century. The town's medieval prosperity came from the wool trade, and it later developed shipbuilding, foundries and sawmills along the River Taw. Today Barnstaple retains a strong Victorian architectural character, centred around the Pannier Market, a glass-and-timber market hall built in 1855, alongside other historic landmarks including the medieval St Peter's Church, the 16-arch Long Bridge, and Queen Anne's Walk, an early 18th century merchants' exchange.
The Rolle Quay Inn sits on Rolle Street, on the banks of the River Yeo just before it joins the River Taw, a short walk over the bridge from Barnstaple town centre, and is found on the main road heading out of town towards Braunton and the coast. Barnstaple remains the principal shopping and trading hub for the wider North Devon region, providing steady year-round local trade, while the nearby Tarka Trail and South West Coast Path draw walkers and cyclists, and the town's heritage sites and coastal proximity bring a strong seasonal tourist trade.
