Description

“A bright apartment that celebrates the building's elegant 1930s architecture”

This wonderful one-bedroom home lies on the first floor of The Grampians, a Grade II-listed art deco mansion block in Shepherd’s Bush. Maurice Webb’s designs for the building were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1935; construction began the same year and was completed in 1937. The interiors are thoughtfully finished with a subtle colour palette and retain a wealth of original features, such as Crittall windows and pine parquet flooring.

The Tour

Entry to The Grampians is via Gibbs surround with two recessed double entrance doors, lending a subtle classical grandeur. The doors open to an entrance lobby with lift access and an adjacent concierge’s office embellished with stylised detailing.

This apartment lies on the first floor and is accessed from a private door at ground level, and up a short set of stairs. Entry is to a bright hallway that first introduces the refined scheme and grand proportions of the interiors. Throughout the plan, large Crittall windows and high ceilings enhance the sense of light and space.

At the front is a generous reception room, thoughtfully appointed with a soothing colour palette, original pine parquet flooring and a dual-aspect design. Floor-to-ceiling curved corner windows along the westerly elevation draw in the soft afternoon sunlight.

Next door is a characterful south-east-facing kitchen, where dark shaker units run along one side and are topped with timber surfaces. The finishes include a large Butler sink and integrated appliances such as an induction hob and dishwasher. Open shelving provides additional storage, and black-and-white chequerboard flooring creates cohesion throughout.

A tranquil double bedroom lies at the rear of the plan, flooded with natural light and complete with a spacious walk-in wardrobe. Across the hall is an airy bathroom with a shower over the bath, white-tiled walls and large, monochromatic chequerboard tiles underfoot.

The Area

Shepherd’s Bush, home to one of London’s Westfields, is within easy walking distance, as is White City, a little further north. The recently renovated Television Centre is at the heart of an exciting regeneration of the area, with independent restaurants such as Kricket, a cinema and the Soho House members’ club, White City House. Hammersmith riverside and its many destinations are a short walk to the south.

The Grampians is also close to Brook Green, a beautiful residential area renowned for its park activities and numerous outstanding schools. The Brook Green Market and Kitchen is a free-range and organic farmers’ market just a 10-minute walk away, running weekly on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The Anglesea Arms is an excellent local pub, while Farina & More and The Bird in Hand are two favourite neighbourhood Italian restaurants. C. Lidgates Butcher has been in the area for over five generations, while The Fishmongers Kitchen is a short walk away.

The apartment is well positioned with Piccadilly, Hammersmith & City, District, Overground and Central lines, all within a 10-minute walk. The nearest stations are Goldhawk Road, Shepherd’s Bush and Hammersmith. Holland Park, Notting Hill and central London are easily accessible by bus or tube. Easy access to the Westway provides a fast route out of London to the west, towards Heathrow Airport and the M4.
