Description
Allardice Castle was the chief seat of the Barons of Allardice, an ancient family who first appeared in an 1197 charter. The castle dates from around 1542 with many alterations and changes made over the years. Particularly important were the changes likely made at the end of the 19th Century which transformed the castle from a cold fortified tower house into a comfortable usable family home. Allardice Castle may be viewed as one of a chain of coastal castles, with Dunnottar, Fetteresso, Cowie and Muchalls Castles to the north. Allardice Castle was bought by the current owners in the 1970’s and over the last 50 years they have undertaken an extensive but sympathetic restoration and upgrading of the castle to form the stunning property it is today.
Allardice Castle is built of harled stone under a slate roof, the three-storey L-shaped building enjoys an elevated setting with views out over the surrounding countryside. The castle ground floor includes a large kitchen/living room with huge original fireplace with wood burner and pantry off, utility room, shower room, vaulted entrance hall and home office. A beautiful spiral staircase rises to the first floor to an impressive Great Hall with a large open fireplace, drawing room and library. There are two bedrooms on the first floor and a shower room. The spiral staircase rises to the second floor with principal bedroom with dressing room, guest bedroom and bathroom. A further staircase leads to two additional bedrooms, one of which features an exquisite painted ceiling documenting the history of the castle. A final spiral staircase leads to the watch tower chamber.
The main rooms retain a wealth of features including cornice work, doors, fireplaces and panelling and the castle feels very liveable. Outside, on the other side of the pend is a large, vaulted storeroom suitable for a number of uses.
It is rare to find a castle such as this, still very much in its original form and unspoilt, yet with bright welcoming rooms.
