Description

An iconic, Harlech home, set within approximately four acres of magnificent grounds, with sensational mountain and sea views, as well as being within walking distance of pubs, shops and restaurants.

A Landmark Home of History, Character and Coastal Beauty

Few homes possess the presence, provenance and breathtaking setting of Crown Lodge. Occupying an enviable, elevated position within approximately four acres of beautifully established gardens and woodland, this remarkable Edwardian residence enjoys commanding panoramic views across Royal St David’s Golf Course, Harlech Beach, the Morfa Dunes, Cardigan Bay, the Ll n Peninsula, Harlech Castle and the mountains of Eryri beyond.

Originally commissioned in 1903 as the private residence of the Crown Agent for Wales, Crown Lodge was designed by renowned Scottish Arts and Crafts architect George Walton. Over more than a century, this distinguished home has changed hands only four times, a testament to both its enduring quality and the deep connection it inspires in those fortunate enough to call it home.

Today, Crown Lodge represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of Harlech’s most celebrated residences, a home where architectural heritage, exceptional privacy and an extraordinary coastal lifestyle combine seamlessly.

A Grand Arrival

Approached through imposing stone entrance gates, a sweeping driveway meanders through the mature grounds before arriving at the impressive façade of the house. The sense of arrival is immediate. Traditional stone walls, expansive lawns, established planting and the former tennis court create a setting of remarkable stature and tranquillity. Positioned centrally within its grounds, the property enjoys an exceptional degree of seclusion, yet it remains just a short walk from the historic centre of Harlech and its many amenities.

Elegant Interiors Rich in Character

The impressive reception hall immediately showcases the craftsmanship synonymous with homes of this era. High ceilings, intricate coving, original detailing and the magnificent Arts and Crafts, Oak staircase create a striking first impression. A welcoming fireplace with log burning stove provides warmth and atmosphere, while features such as the original panelled telephone cupboard offer fascinating reminders of the property’s rich history. Throughout the home, beautifully proportioned rooms, high skirting boards, decorative architraves and period detailing have been carefully preserved and sympathetically enhanced.

Exceptional Reception Spaces

The principal sitting room is both elegant and inviting. Bathed in natural light throughout the day, it enjoys spectacular coastal views and provides a wonderful space for entertaining, relaxing beside the fire or simply admiring the ever changing scenery.

A second reception room offers valuable flexibility and could serve equally well as a snug, home office, library, playroom or media room depending upon individual requirements.

The formal dining room is perfectly positioned to embrace the exceptional outlook. Large windows frame the coastline beyond, creating a stunning backdrop for both everyday dining and special occasions.

The Heart of the Home

Recently remodelled by the current owners, the spacious kitchen and dining area offers a sociable and welcoming environment for family life and entertaining alike. Featuring a bespoke dresser, wine storage and a range of fitted and freestanding cabinetry, the space combines practicality with character while offering exciting opportunities for future owners to further personalise and enhance the room.

Flexible Accommodation with Outstanding Views

The accommodation extends to six ensuite bedrooms arranged across three floors, providing exceptional flexibility for a variety of lifestyles.

The ground floor includes a generous ensuite bedroom, ideal for guests, multi generational living or those seeking single level accommodation.

On the first floor, the magnificent staircase rises to a collection of beautifully proportioned bedrooms, each with its own unique character and outlook. Particularly impressive is an elegant suite comprising a sitting area, bedroom and ensuite, while another spectacular bedroom features a bay window framing arguably the finest views in the house, encompassing Harlech Castle, the coastline and the mountains beyond. The principal bedroom offers generous proportions and an ensuite complete with bath, creates a peaceful sanctuary from which to enjoy the stunning surroundings.

Adding further versatility, the second floor provides a self contained style suite incorporating a sitting room, bedroom, dressing room and ensuite facilities. This adaptable space is perfectly suited for guests, teenagers, extended family or potential staff accommodation.

The property also retains its original “Maid’s Staircase”, a fascinating architectural feature offering independent access between floors.

A Home of Remarkable Possibility

Currently operating as a highly successful, luxury guest house, Crown Lodge presents a wealth of exciting opportunities. Whether reimagined as a substantial private family residence, continued as an established hospitality business, adapted for multi generational living or developed as an exclusive boutique retreat, the flexibility of the accommodation allows future owners to tailor the property to their own vision and lifestyle.

Magnificent Grounds and Outdoor Living

The gardens surrounding Crown Lodge are every bit as captivating as the house itself. Beautifully established and thoughtfully maintained, they provide year round colour, texture and interest through an abundance of hydrangeas, rhododendrons, lilies and mature specimen planting.

The grounds offer a wonderful sense of freedom and privacy, with expansive lawns, woodland areas and peaceful seating terraces creating spaces to entertain, relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the setting. A sheltered rear terrace captures the morning sun beautifully and provides the perfect spot for coffee, reflection and quieter moments throughout the day.

Several useful outbuildings, including a workshop, further enhance the practicality of the grounds.

The former tennis court could easily be reinstated and from this part of the grounds there are views of Harlech Castle whilst other parts of the grounds enjoy magnificent sea and mountain views.

A Lifestyle Without Compromise

Crown Lodge occupies one of the most desirable positions within the historic coastal town of Harlech. From the doorstep, owners can enjoy world class links golf at Royal St David’s Golf Club, miles of golden sandy beaches, breathtaking coastal and mountain walks, welcoming restaurants and traditional pubs. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Harlech Castle stands proudly above the town, while the wider landscapes of Eryri National Park provide endless opportunities for outdoor adventure and exploration. Despite its wonderfully secluded setting, local shops, schools, transport links and everyday amenities remain conveniently close at hand.

The Next Chapter

For the current owners, Crown Lodge has been far more than simply a house. It has been a treasured home, lovingly restored, carefully preserved and deeply enjoyed. Now, an extraordinary opportunity exists for a new custodian to become part of its remarkable story and secure one of Harlech’s most iconic and admired residences. A home of history, substance and soul. A home where every view inspires and every arrival feels special. A home unlike any other.

Vendor Insight

When did you first find this home, what first drew you to it, and what was it that instantly captured your heart?

We found this home in 2016 and we were drawn to it by the history and chacter of the building. The house sits centrally in it’s four acre plot giving a great deal of privacy and seclusion. It’s a home which gives great balance, It’s not too big or too small, close to town but not too close.  The driveway is both impressive and functional and then, the view. Seeing that view for the first time was the moment we knew that this was the one!

Following those first impressions, how has your connection deepened over time? How would you describe the feeling of arriving home, whether at the end of a busy day, after a weekend trip or simply just a few hours away?

Putting our own stamp on the property has given us a deep connection to the house, but there is still plenty of scope for another owner to put their stamp on it. It has genuinely been an honour to own Crown Lodge and every time we Arrive back home we have a feeling of Sanctuary.

Tell us a little about the home’s history. Have you made any changes or additions that you feel have enhanced its character or functionality?

The house has a rich history. Originally built for the Crown Agent for Wales in 1903, it has served as a family home, hotel and guest house over the years. We returned the home to its original identity and character. The feature we most love is The Reception Hall, with a fabulous staircase and the perfect setting for a massive Christmas Tree.

Which spaces do you find yourself gravitating to most, and why? How does your home make day to day living feel special? What time of year does the property feel most magical, and why?

We mostly gravitate to the Living Room for its class. We have had so many family talks in the kitchen which has been a special place for us. Fires in the winter are great. The sunsets and the way the sun enters the building are incredible. We love our walks around the garden. Crown Lodge is a home that can be enjoyed All year, summer with its sunsets and sea view, autumn with the trees and their colours, Christmas is great and winter in general with the wood burners give a homely atmosphere and Spring – WOW, the garden comes alive!

For families, what do you feel makes this such a wonderful place to raise children?

Space in the house gives the opportunity of freedom and family intimacy. The Grounds are made for a growing family to experience life in their own setting and the beach is so close for family activities and fun.

How would you describe the local community and the lifestyle on offer? Are there favourite local spots, cafés, pubs, restaurants, walks, hidden gems etc that really capture the spirit of living here?

The local community is there to compliment your lifestyle, should you wish. There are things like The Historical Society, Yoga, Sports Centre, Golf and Outdoor Activities. The local walks are unsurpassed and the beach is one of the best in the world. We have operated an aircraft locally and have a boat moored in Pwllheli Marina. There are great Pubs and Restaurants within walking distance

What kinds of memories have been created here?

Family celebrations have been unforgettable experiences, revolving around the house, garden and the beach being so accessible.

What do you think the next owners will fall in love with most?

The next owners will be able to stamp their own identity on the House. They will no doubt love all the things that we love about the house. Crown Lodge will make a great family home for someone new.

As you prepare to move on, what will you miss most and what will you take with you in your memories?

Crown Lodge has always made us feel special as owners, we will be unlikely to find anywhere else like it.
