INTRODUCTION:
The Grange is an Arts and Crafts property which is full of character, charm, heritage, and natural light. Lovingly cared for by its current owners, this home has brought them years of joy and happiness. Designed by local architect John Rickinson in 1881, the property has a wonderful sense of history and architectural significance, yet warm, welcoming, and very much like home. The detail is exquisite throughout with carved details, exceptional craftsmanship, and design full of personality. In particular, the two striking hand-carved chimney pieces create a distinctive focal point and beautifully reflect the artistry and heritage of the period.
Welcomed in by the light-filled internal courtyard creates an immediate first impression and presents a graceful indoor-outdoor transition through the house. Leading into the stylish contemporary kitchen, this room beautifully showcases the home's historic character with a modern elegance. The magnificent panelled games room and superb snooker table is an impressive and sophisticated setting for entertaining guests, friends, and family. The bedrooms are generously spacious and thoughtfully designed with panoramic views of the sea and gardens. The veranda captures the beauty of its coastal setting, offering a front-row seat to magnificent coastal views and the surrounding moors. This gives the home an incredibly peaceful connection to the landscape. The adjoining contemporary one-bedroom guest cottage is very unique, with its layout designed to maximise the view over the bay.
The gardens are as equally impressive, with extensive beautifully maintained grounds that provide a wonderful sense of space and privacy. Thoughtfully landscaped to create a series of inviting outdoor areas, a koi pond and conservatory create a tranquil retreat in which to relax, entertain, or simply enjoy the far-reaching views. Designed to make the most of its setting, this exceptional outdoor space offers a seamless connection between the home and its surroundings, perfect for quiet moments and memorable gatherings.
The Grange is truly a remarkable and special home, where heritage, craftsmanship, and modern comfort come together beautifully.
ENVIRONS:
Fylingthorpe is a beautiful coastal village located outside Robin Hood's Bay, featuring a traditional Yorkshire pub, the Fylingdales Inn which is very popular with walkers and locals. It has also reopened after a major refurbishment. There is village shop called Thorpe Stores and Barnards Butchers & Bakers. The Grange is also situated minutes away from the Cinder Track, a nationally renowned walking and cycling trail running from Whitby to Scarborough.
Robin Hood's Bay is an idyllic fishing village dating back to the 16th Century and has a romantic picturesque appearance overhanging the sea. Designated in 1995 as an area of conservation for its architectural and historic interest, the village is infamous for its winding, steep cobbled pathways lined with colourful flowerpots and cottages clinging to ravine sides. Dominating the scene of Robin Hood's Bay is the coast itself, and the charming cascade of red pantile roofs, whitewashed stone-built cottages, and quaint porches. Evidence indicates that the surrounding area was first settled over 3000 years ago during the Stone Age. The steep road connects the old part of the village to the more modern development at the top of the bank. The first school opened in 1810, occupying two cottages in The Square; the National School was later formed in 1814, and navigation schools were created by retired master mariners. When the railway arrived here in 1885, the area grew to where rich sea captains lived and local fishermen supplied the City of York with fish and vast quantities of crabs and lobsters. During this time, the railway opened a wider curiosity as the bay began to attract visitors and a colony of artists from the end of the First World War.
Robin Hood's Bay boasts an abundance of cafes and fine eateries including the delightful The Galley on the Quarterdeck, Tea, Toast and Post (Travellers Food Choice 2024) to the haute cuisine and panoramic views of The Victoria Hotel, which hosted the stage set for Daniel Day-Lewis' 'Phantom Thread'. Ye Dolphin pub has reopened after major refurbishment and is a very popular venue for drinks, music, and comedy events. Not forgetting Robin Hood's Bay's ultimate seaside special, fish and chips - there's also a wet fish shop, should you prefer to cook your own. In a word, this hidden picture postcard hamlet, literally has it all. There are a wonderful array of independent shops from Berties of Bay selling local ganseys, The Old Drapery, and the famous resident local artist John Henny. Treat yourself at Dollies Sweet Shop or at their ice cream van on the beach, or Browns Chocolates, explore the gifts at Jessica Hogarth. One thing you won't find in Robin Hood's Bay is an amusement arcade! The Bay hosts two convenience stores, a post office, and a doctors surgery. Only four miles away towards Whitby are a plethora of supermarkets including Aldi and Sainsbury's, and a petrol station too. The coastal town of Whitby lies just a 15-minute drive away where you will find more beautiful beach walks, coastal paths, and the magnificent Abbey. For travelling and commuting, there is an amazing bus service to Scarborough and Middlesbrough every 30 minutes. Railway services also operate from Whitby and Scarborough with direct links to York, Leeds, and London Kings Cross.
The National Trust's Old Coastguard Station offers a fantastic visitor centre with interesting history on fossils, sea life, and tales of smugglers, as does the local dinosaur shop. There is a Robin Hood's Bay Museum situated in the Old Coroner's Room and Mortuary displaying similar local history of shipwrecks and rescues, and a unique model of a smugglers house. For those desiring even more of the past, the notorious Ghost Walk takes you through the streets and alleyways whilst listening to the tales of the strange and supernatural. Woven into the heritage of the Bay is traditional folk music that has been passed down through the generations, often sung in The Wainwright Bar at The Bar Hotel and annual folk weekend in June. Additionally, there is an independent art group who encourage locals and visitors to join and develop their artistic talents. Robin Hood's Bay has its own tennis courts and Bowling Club in addition to W.I and a Village Hall. There is an incredibly popular walk in a circular amble across the Bay's beach and over the cliff path, which is just over 2km long and takes around 2 hours. The walk begins down the slipway at low tide onto the beach, eventually reaching an inlet called Boggle Hole at the other end of the Bay. The caves here are a place where smugglers often landed their illegal contraband! The path continues to take you back to Robin Hood's Bay along the clifftop following The Cleveland Way Trail. The North Yorkshire Moors are also home to some breath-taking scenic trails, and if biodiversity and archaeology interests you, the Fylingdales Moor Conservation Project offers guided nature trails.
