Description
This thoughtful barn conversion lies within a secluded valley in the Powys countryside where contemporary glazing frames panoramic views across the rolling hills of the Welsh Marches. This remarkable home commits to eco-conscious living inside and out, while its considered configuration draws the surrounding landscape deep into the interiors.
Pentre Barn occupies a sheltered plot as part of a former smallholding and is subtly screened from the neighbouring house by planting and larch fencing. A private pebbled driveway leads to the entrance, where a decidedly contemporary frontage is formed of exposed brick, clean-lined timber cladding and expansive glazing.
The house has been rigorously designed with an environmental approach - triple glazed windows, a ground source heat pump and high levels of insulation contribute to a near Passivhaus level of energy efficiency. Fibre-optic broadband has been connected, providing high-speed internet connection within the barn.
A frosted-glass door opens to a spacious hallway, fitted with full-height built-in storage that houses the heat pump along with a washer and dryer. Dark-grey porcelain floor tiles run underfoot through to an open-plan kitchen-dining-living space. The kitchen is streamlined with neat, white modular cabinets, marble-style surfaces and new appliances. A central run of cabinetry partitions the kitchen from the seating area.
The living space unfolds with spectacular triple-aspect views of the landscape beyond, accessed through a large sliding door. A wood-burning stove anchors the space and adds warmth in winter, while a restrained palette amplifies the sense of light and flow.
Completing this floor, a generous reception room is currently arranged as an office, and a well-appointed bathroom has a walk-in shower and birch ply accent walls. A substantial cellar runs below, accessible by a trapdoor.
From the entrance hall, a staircase rises to the first floor, where three well-apportioned bedrooms are equipped with en suite bathrooms and fitted wardrobes. Perfectly oriented, the principal bedroom has sublime views from a secluded Juliet balcony, and a walk-in wardrobe. The additional bedrooms have dual-aspect picture windows.
Outdoor Space
An arch in the flowering hedge leads through to an orchard with productive fruit trees, that form wonderful tapestries of scent and colour throughout the seasons.
Beyond the orchard, the barn is surrounded by 6.1 acres of verdant open spaces and woodland, available by separate negotiation, lending a wonderful sense of privacy and an intimate relationship with the vast natural landscape which is home to a multitude of wildlife.
Accessed from the kitchen, a broad outdoor dining area sits peacefully in the rear courtyard, a sheltered spot for long lunches.
The Area
The Picturesque village of Berriew is best known for its ancient church, as well as The Andrew Logan Sculpture Museum. It also boasts a village store, butcher, tearoom and two pubs. Berriew’s surrounding landscapes are diverse, with well-maintained towpaths, rolling hills, and expansive farmland providing varied terrain for outdoor hikes. National cycle route 81, which links Wolverhampton and Aberystwyth, runs up the quiet lane past the barn.
The nearby market town of Welshpool is home to the magnificent Powis Castle and its famous gardens. The Montgomery Canal runs through Welshpool and is a lovely spot for an afternoon stroll. The charming town of Montgomery is close by, with castle ruins, independent shops including Bunners - one of the last remaining traditional ironmongers, the very popular Castle Kitchen and the well-reputed restaurant The Checkers.
Cultural sites include Gregynog Hall, Newtown’s Oriel Davies Gallery of contemporary art and Theatre Hafren. Meanwhile, Darwin’s home town of Shrewsbury is around 50 minutes away with its historic centre, excellent restaurants and a well-loved indoor foodmarket.
Newtown and Welshpool stations are both a short drive from the house, providing links to Birmingham International and London Euston to the east and the beautiful Welsh coast to the west. Road connections are good: the A483 runs south toward Brecon, and the A458 brings Shrewsbury within easy reach.
