Description

Seller’s Comments

“We used to live next door, so when our neighbours offered us the opportunity to buy their home, it was an instant ‘yes’. We had admired the house every day as we walked past and already knew there was something particularly special about it.

We were drawn to its Georgian character and the period features that give it so much personality. The exposed beams, beautiful windows and unusual arrangement over three floors made it feel completely different from anything else we had seen. It had all the history and character we were looking for, while still feeling like somewhere we could make our own.

The location has been perfect for us. We are right in the centre of Disley, close to the village shops, places to eat and the railway station, yet the house is tucked quietly away from the road. We can step outside and be on some fantastic countryside walking and running routes within minutes, while the direct train into Manchester has made commuting incredibly convenient.

It has given us the best of both worlds: village life and open countryside on the doorstep, with city and town centres still within easy reach. We hope the next owners enjoy living here as much as we have.”

Tom’s Comments (the Estate Agent)

“Some homes reveal themselves immediately. Moore’s Buildings makes you work a little harder, hidden away from Buxton Old Road along a stone-flagged pathway within a small cluster of historic properties. That sense of discovery is all part of its charm.

Grade II listed and officially dated to the second half of the 18th century, the house is believed to have stood here for somewhere in the region of 250 years. It is traditionally thought to have begun life as a weaver’s cottage and may have links to the wider Lyme Estate. While not every chapter of its story can be proved, its sandstone construction, sliding sash windows, Kerridge stone roof and substantial roof timbers leave no doubt that this is a home with genuine history in its fabric.

The accommodation is arranged over three floors, but not in the predictable way you might expect. The entrance level is the social heart of the home, with a spacious kitchen and dining area, a separate office and a useful utility room with a downstairs WC. The office is particularly valuable for anyone working from home, without asking one of the bedrooms to perform more than one job.

Two bedrooms and the bathroom occupy the middle floor, before the house saves its most memorable room until last. The top-floor living room rises into the roofline beneath a dramatic apex ceiling, with exposed beams and rafters creating a space full of warmth and architectural character. It is a wonderful room for relaxing, entertaining or simply watching the light change across the timbers as the day moves on.

There is also a private courtyard garden at the front of the house. Enclosed by the surrounding historic buildings, it feels pleasantly removed from the activity of the village and provides space for outdoor seating, pots and planting.

Location is a major part of the appeal. Disley offers independent shops, cafés, pubs and everyday amenities, alongside a railway station providing direct connections into Manchester. The village sits at the gateway to the Peak District, with miles of countryside to explore and the historic parkland of Lyme close by. It is an excellent setting for anyone who enjoys walking, running, cycling or simply having more green space within everyday life.

This is not a conventional two-bedroom house, and that is precisely the point. It is a home for someone who values individuality, atmosphere and history, while still wanting village amenities, transport connections and the countryside on their doorstep.

I recommend viewing it slowly. There are details here that photographs alone cannot fully capture, and around 250 years of character deserves more than a hurried walk-through.”
