Description
DESCRIPTION
Invercoe House retains an exceptional wealth of period character, from its impressive entrance hall and sweeping curved staircase with mahogany monkey-tail newel post and ornate Victorian cast-iron balustrades, to the elegant lounge and formal dining room with original plasterwork, sash windows, shutters and marble fireplaces.
The spacious family kitchen is fitted with solid oak cabinetry, granite worktops and integrated appliances, while the accommodation extends across two upper floors, including a principal bedroom with en-suite, a second en-suite double bedroom, a further bedroom, two family bathrooms and two substantial attic rooms, each with original fireplaces and en-suite shower rooms.
LOCATION/AMENITIES
Set in the heart of Glencoe, Invercoe House enjoys an exceptional Highland setting with easy access to the spectacular landscapes of Glen Coe and Loch Leven. Glencoe and nearby Ballachulish together provide a good range of everyday amenities, including shops, cafés, hotels, restaurants, a medical centre, post office and primary school. The area is renowned for its outdoor lifestyle, with walking, climbing, cycling, kayaking, skiing and wildlife watching all readily accessible, while Fort William, Kinlochleven, Glen Etive and the West Highland Way are within easy reach. With its year-round appeal to visitors and outstanding natural setting, the area offers considerable attraction both as a Highland home and as a base for tourism and outdoor-focused enterprise.
RESTORATION
The house offers a fascinating combination of historic character and the foundations of a substantial restoration project. Work has been undertaken by the current owners to preserve and upgrade the property, but the restoration remains incomplete and the property is sold as seen. Further works will be required, including review and completion of elements of the electrical installation, and prospective purchasers should approach the property as one where they can shape the next chapter of its restoration.
A PIECE OF HISTORY
Glencoe clan and the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692, with evidence suggesting occupation from at least the 17th century. The present three-storey house dates from circa 1785, and was later home to Ellen Burns MacDonald, a descendant of the MacDonald chiefs and benefactor of both St Mary's Church and the Memorial Cross at Upper Carnoch.
In the 20th century, the house was acquired by Barbara Fairweather, founder of the Glencoe Folk Museum, before passing into its present ownership in 2004. Although recognised in the National Record of the Historic Environment, Invercoe House is not a listed building. Today, it offers a rare opportunity to become custodian of a substantial Highland home with a remarkable connection to Glencoe's past.
