Description

Old Manse Cottage is in the hamlet of Sangomore on the edge of Durness in Sutherland. The property is in an attractive setting, tucked in behind the church and with views over the surrounding landscape and to the North Minch. The northern Highlands of Scotland is one of the few landscapes which is still largely unaltered by human interference and on this western edge of the mainland, the wildness has shaped an environment which is at once beautiful and dramatic and offers the opportunity to enjoy nature at its best. The area offers excellent amenity with its coastal walks, sandy beach at Sango Bay, and the famous Smoo Cave, while the village is a destination for artists inspired by the landscape and endless skies. In the wider area, there are challenging mountain climbs, sandy beaches popular with surfers, and high quality salmon fishing, as well as RSPB and Nature Scotland reserves which protect our rarest native wildlife and flora only seen in this part of the UK. The village of Durness has an excellent village shop, a doctors’ surgery, filling station and primary school. Secondary schooling is available in Kinlochbervie and Tongue, both of which have a further range of shops and facilities. Inverness is about 2.5 hours’ drive away and has all the facilities of a modern city along with its Airport with regular flights to the south and Europe.

The sellers purchased The Old Manse in 2014 and in 2018 secured planning consent to build a two storey cottage on the site of a former barn within the grounds. Completed to a very high standard and using stone from the original building, the sellers have created a charming, beautifully finished cottage which sits comfortably in the landscape. Currently a highly successful holiday let, Old Manse Cottage holiday lets are managed through the sellers’ website and Booking.com, achieving high occupancy levels and many repeat bookings.
