Location
For lifestyle and leisure, the surrounding area has a good selection of independent businesses, cafés and restaurants, while the historic Lichfield Cathedral and Cathedral Close provide one of the city's most distinctive attractions. Lichfield Cathedral The cathedral is the only medieval English cathedral with three spires, known locally as the Ladies of the Vale.
A brief history of Lichfield
Lichfield has a history stretching back well over 1,300 years and became an important religious centre during the Anglo-Saxon period. St Chad arrived in Lichfield in 669 AD, establishing a religious community here. Following his death, his shrine became an important pilgrimage destination, and the first cathedral was consecrated in around 700 AD.
The present cathedral developed mainly during the medieval period, with the Gothic building being constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries. The fortified Cathedral Close later became strategically important during the English Civil War, when Lichfield Cathedral was besieged three times and suffered severe damage.
Lichfield subsequently enjoyed a particularly notable 18th-century cultural period. The city became associated with figures including Samuel Johnson, the famous writer and lexicographer, as well as Erasmus Darwin and members of the Lunar Society. Lichfield's connections with literature, science, education and culture helped establish its reputation as an important centre of the Enlightenment in the Midlands.
