Description

There is a point on the road north from Glasgow where the city begins to fall away and the landscape starts to take over. Roads become quieter, fields open up and, before long, Ben Lomond and the southern Highlands appear on the horizon. Beechwood sits right at that meeting point.

Set privately within approximately 0.8 acres in the village of Croftamie, this handsome traditional detached house offers something difficult to find: a country home, with space, privacy and remarkable views, yet close enough to Glasgow for the city to remain part of everyday life.

Formerly part of the historic Montrose Estate and still recorded on the original Sasine title deeds, Beechwood has a sense of permanence about it. The house sits comfortably within its substantial plot, set back from the road behind its own grounds and surrounded by mature trees, hedging and established gardens. From various points around the property, the outlook stretches towards Ben Lomond, Conic Hill and the Campsies, giving a very real sense that Loch Lomond and the Highlands are beginning almost at the garden gate.

The house itself is substantial, characterful and individual.

The entrance hall immediately sets the tone, with its broad staircase, original-style joinery and generous proportions. From here, the ground floor unfolds into three reception rooms, giving the house a flexibility that works particularly well for family life. The principal drawing room is an impressive space, with high ceilings, decorative cornicing and a fireplace, extending through a broad archway to a further sitting area with French doors opening towards the garden.

Elsewhere, another particularly bright reception room looks directly onto the garden from windows on three sides. The carpet rolls back to reveal a lovely polished floor ideal for all types of dancing including Scottish country dancing. It would work equally well as a family room, home office, library or more informal living space, while still leaving the principal reception rooms entirely separate.

The kitchen is arranged around a generous dining area, creating an easy everyday hub to the house, while two adjoining utility rooms provide the sort of practical space that becomes invaluable in a property of this scale. There is also a downstairs WC and useful additional storage.

Upstairs, the sense of space continues.

There are four bedrooms, with the principal bedroom being particularly generous and currently incorporating an ancillary fourth bedroom area. The remaining bedrooms are well proportioned, with wonderful elevated outlooks from several of the windows. An additional box room with fitted dressing-room cupboards is currently used as an airing cupboard, but offers obvious flexibility as a home office or occasional fifth bedroom. Two bathrooms complete the upper accommodation.

The approximately 0.8-acre plot wraps around the house and provides a wonderful degree of privacy. There are large lawns, mature shrubs and trees, established planting, a garden pond and numerous areas to sit and follow the sun throughout the day. The aerial view perhaps explains the setting best: the house occupies the centre of its own grounds rather than simply having a large garden attached to it.

There is also an unusual amount of ancillary space. A detached double garage, separate single garage and summer house provide excellent storage and workshop potential, with plenty of room around the property for vehicles and the paraphernalia that tends to accompany country life.

And then there is the location.

Beechwood sits within, but on the edge of, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. The West Highland Way is approximately three kilometres away, while Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and some of Scotland’s best walking, cycling and outdoor country are all within remarkably easy reach.

Turn in the other direction and the proposition changes completely. Bearsden is around 20 minutes away via Stockiemuir Road, Glasgow Airport is approximately 40 minutes by car, and Glasgow’s West End remains readily accessible. It makes Beechwood an interesting alternative for someone who loves the West End but has reached the point where a larger garden, greater privacy, garages and open countryside feel rather more appealing than another room and a parking permit.

It is close enough to Glasgow that moving here needn’t mean leaving the city behind, yet far enough away that, from the garden on a clear day with Ben Lomond on the horizon, it can feel an entirely different world.
