Description

Believed to date back to 1506, The Old Cottage is a charming Grade II listed thatched home tucked away along a quiet single-track lane in Chittoe.

Once thought to have been the village meeting house, it has evolved over the centuries, with later additions creating a wonderfully characterful family home. ‘It is the quintessential chocolate-box house in an idyllic setting surrounded by beautiful countryside. There are only six houses along the lane, so it is incredibly peaceful, yet we never feel isolated,’ explain the owners.

Laid out over two floors with an additional cellar, the house combines traditional features with a light and welcoming feel. The ground floor has an open plan kitchen/dining room, a family room, sitting room and shower room and WC, while upstairs are four double bedrooms and a family bathroom. Beams, wattle and daub walls and a large inglenook fireplace add to its historic character.

‘Some thatched houses can feel dark, but the ceiling heights and double-aspect rooms make this one surprisingly light and bright, while still being cosy and homely.’

The garden is a particular highlight, with established acers and rhododendrons, mature trees, woodland to the rear, a pond, patio and pagoda seating area. ‘The garden is wonderful for nature and wildlife. We have birdsong all day, lots of butterflies, pheasants wandering through and red kites overhead.’ A separate garage and garden room add practicality, while there is parking for several cars.

The Old Cottage’s rural position offers the best of both worlds. A farm shop is just a short walk away, while the local pub can be reached on foot across the fields. Melksham and Lacock are just five minutes away, and there are numerous attractive market towns within easy reach. ‘It’s a lovely community to live in and our neighbours are friendly and helpful without being intrusive – the local WhatsApp group is brilliant.’

‘The house has such a good feel when you walk through the door. It is cosy, quirky and full of character, but there is also plenty of space.’

‘We love the snug, with its huge inglenook and log fire. It’s the perfect place for curling up with a book.’

‘We’ll miss the peace and the house itself most of all. It’s rare to find somewhere in such a calming and almost other-worldly setting.’
