Description
Originally an old schoolmaster’s house, it forms part of a village steeped in history, with the adjoining barn once belonging to the local pub. ‘We love that the house is right in the centre of the village but feels incredibly private,’ say the owners.
Having bought the house in 2006, several improvements have been made, including an extension, new roof, windows, heating and electrics, as well as an attractive stone wall around the property.
The house is arranged over two floors, with a kitchen/dining room, utility, large reception room, snug and cloakroom on the ground floor, while four bedrooms, one with a dressing room, a family bathroom and an en suite occupy the first floor. ‘The snug has always been a particularly useful room, whether as a home office or somewhere to escape to when the house is full.’ A separate barn building comprising a garage with a studio and bathroom above is accessed via external stairs. ‘This building has been used as a successful B&B, which is often fully booked.’ Ample private parking for residents and visitors adds further flexibility.
Outside, the enclosed garden provides a private setting for entertaining, with views towards the village church tower. ‘We enjoy easy access to the garden, with bifold doors from the kitchen opening directly outside and a stable door from the cooking area making it particularly easy to serve food outdoors.’
Upper South Wraxall combines a peaceful rural setting with a sociable community. Village teas, quizzes, breakfasts and music events are held throughout the year, while the local pub provides an impressive culinary experience. ‘We’ve loved having friends over for drinks before walking to the pub for Sunday lunch.’ The surrounding countryside offers fabulous walks and outdoor pursuits, with Bath, good restaurants and transport links within easy reach. ‘You have all the benefits of living in the countryside, but there is so much to do and see nearby.’
‘We particularly love the winter evenings, when a log burner makes the whole house feel incredibly cosy.’
‘Bedroom two was always my favourite. It is so quiet, and with the curtains open you can lie in bed and watch the stars.’
‘We will miss our friends and neighbours most of all. The village is just a very lovely place to live.’
