With the Water of Fleet forming its western boundary, Cally Estate lies on the western side of a valley which is amongst the lesser known natural historical delights of the Scottish Southern Uplands.

Draining the eastern slopes of the imposing 2,366-foot peak of Cairnsmore of Fleet, the Big Water of Fleet is formed from the confluence of several hill burns at the heart of the Galloway Hills. On leaving its extensively afforested headwaters, the river follows a southerly course through a beautiful landscape characterised by open hill ground of heather and mixed grasses with extensive areas of native deciduous woodland interspersed with stands of coniferous woodland planted for both agricultural and sporting purposes.Draining the eastern slopes of the imposing 2,366-foot peak

Joined by its principal tributary, the Little Water of Fleet beside the ancient oak wood of Castramon (a Scottish Wildlife Trust nature reserve), the Water of Fleet continues its largely woodland-clad course through an agricultural landscape of improving quality to the village of Gatehouse-of-Fleet where
it meets its tidal waters. From here it passes an 18th Century harbour (Port Macadam) and then drains into the Irish Sea via Fleet and Wigtown Bays.
