Description
“We bought The Old Ramshaw School in 2019 because we wanted somewhere genuinely rural, with views and seclusion, but without feeling disconnected from the places we needed to reach. The character and history were a huge part of the attraction too, and as a multigenerational family the layout has been perfect. There’s plenty of space to be together, but just as importantly, space to have time apart, both inside and outside. We’ll especially miss the sunsets over the hills and the feeling of coming home to somewhere so peaceful.”
LOCAL AREA:
Upper Hulme is the kind of place that makes its presence felt before you've even reached the front door. The Old Ramshaw School sits beneath the Roaches and Ramshaw Rocks, surrounded by the gritstone, moorland and scattered farms of the Staffordshire Moorlands, with the famous Winking Man rock formation amongst its closest landmarks, and the local pub of the same name just up the road. The building has its own place in that history too, once serving this rural community as a Victorian school. And then there's one of the area's more unusual claims to fame, with wild wallabies once roaming the Roaches for decades.
For somewhere that feels so wonderfully removed from urban life, it's remarkably connected. Buxton, Macclesfield, Stoke, Sheffield and Derby are all within reach, making it possible to spend the working day elsewhere and return home to somewhere that feels a world away. At weekends, walking, climbing and miles of open countryside begin virtually from the doorstep, with the Roaches providing one of the Staffordshire Moorlands' most distinctive landscapes.
AGENT'S DESCRIPTION:
There are converted buildings where the history has gradually disappeared beneath the conversion, and then there is The Old Ramshaw School. The bell still hangs at the front, chalkboards remain beside the mezzanine and exposed beams run overhead, while those enormous arched windows fill the main living room with light. Now a four-bedroom, 2,012 sq ft home, it has retained the character and charm that make its past immediately apparent, while becoming somewhere exceptionally flexible for modern, and particularly multi-generational, family life.
The main living room is the natural gathering place. Its double-height proportions rise towards the mezzanine above, with the former school architecture still playing a starring role and a substantial log burner set into the exposed brick fireplace. Yet one of this home's greatest luxuries is not having to share the same space every evening. A separate snug sitting room offers somewhere quieter to retreat to with southward views towards Ramshaw Rocks, there's a dedicated dining room as well as dining space within the kitchen, and even the basement has found another life as a secluded home office, which unusually for a basement, still brings in natural light from a south-facing window.
The kitchen was refitted in 2025, giving The Old Ramshaw School a more contemporary space for everyday family life while still sitting comfortably alongside its older character. There's room for a table at its centre, making it somewhere for breakfast before the day starts or dinner together in the evening, while French doors open onto the quieter side of the garden. The neutral Shaker cabinetry, marble-effect quartz worktops and travertine-tiled chimney breast keep the finish sympathetic to the building, with plenty of storage tucked away too.
Four bedrooms are arranged in a way that gives the home an unusual degree of flexibility. One sits on the ground floor alongside the main bathroom, particularly useful for multi-generational living or guests who would rather avoid the stairs. Three further bedrooms are upstairs, with the principal bedroom having its own recently-fitted modern en suite and Sharps wardrobes and media wall (2025). It means different generations can have genuine separation when they want it, without compromising the spaces where everyone comes back together.
Outside, the garden offers the same sense of choice. The main south-facing lawn takes in the distinctive outline of Ramshaw Rocks and the Winking Man, while a more secluded west-facing corner catches the evening sun and provides a quieter setting for outdoor dining. The enclosed grounds have also proved particularly useful with dogs, giving them somewhere to roam with secure separation from the road, while the garage provides an extraordinary amount of additional space. At almost eight metres long and approaching five metres wide, it's far beyond ordinary garaging and offers obvious potential for a workshop, serious hobby space or, subject to the necessary consents, conversion into substantial additional accommodation.
What makes The Old Ramshaw School difficult to replicate isn't any single feature. It's waking up somewhere genuinely secluded, looking across the Staffordshire Moorlands, and living amongst pieces of a building's Victorian past without sacrificing the comforts expected of a modern home for an excessive commute. Add the flexibility of four bedrooms, abundant living space and the enormous garage, and its character, charm and seclusion are matched by something equally important: a home capable of working for more than one generation at once.
