Alness is an attractive and well-established town in Easter Ross, beautifully positioned on the northern shore of the Cromarty Firth and approximately 20 miles north of Inverness. Combining a strong sense of community with excellent transport links, a good range of local amenities and an impressive surrounding landscape, Alness has long been regarded as one of the more desirable places to live in this part of the Highlands.
The town stretches along the River Averon, which flows through Alness before reaching the Cromarty Firth. The surrounding landscape is particularly attractive, with the waters of the firth to the south, open farmland and woodland around the town, and the hills and moorland rising to the north.
Alness has a fascinating history stretching back many centuries, with the settlement recorded as early as the 13th century. Its development accelerated during the 18th and 19th centuries, when improved transport links and the growth of local industries helped transform the town.
The impressive stone bridge over the River Averon was constructed in the early 19th century under the direction of Thomas Telford, forming an important part of the improved road network through Easter Ross.
The town also has strong connections with the Highland whisky industry. Teaninich Distillery, established in 1817, and Dalmore Distillery, established in 1839, are both associated with Alness. Dalmore occupies a particularly picturesque position beside the Cromarty Firth, with the Black Isle providing a spectacular backdrop.
The Cromarty Firth itself has played an important role in the area's industrial and military history. During both World Wars the firth became strategically significant, with the Alness area having connections to naval and RAF operations.
Modern Alness provides many of the everyday facilities expected of a well-established Highland town. The traditional High Street forms the heart of the community, with shops, cafés, professional services and other local businesses, while surrounding residential areas provide a mixture of traditional properties, council-built housing, private developments and more modern family homes.
The town is particularly well known for its floral displays and strong community spirit, having enjoyed considerable success in Scotland in Bloom competitions.
There are attractive riverside walks, woodland areas and countryside paths providing plenty of opportunities for walking and enjoying the outdoors.
For families, Alness offers a practical combination of local schooling, recreational facilities, sporting opportunities and access to the wider services of Easter Ross. Its location also means residents can enjoy a quieter Highland lifestyle without feeling isolated from larger centres.
One of the defining features of the area is Fyrish Hill, rising above Alness and neighbouring Evanton.
At the summit stands the remarkable Fyrish Monument, one of the best-known landmarks in Easter Ross. The monument was commissioned by General Sir Hector Munro of Novar and constructed during the 1780s. Its distinctive stone arches provide one of the area's most recognisable landmarks.
The walk to the monument is rewarded with superb panoramic views across the Cromarty Firth, the Black Isle and towards Ben Wyvis. The hill and surrounding countryside provide an outstanding setting for walking and enjoying the Highland landscape.
Immediately west of Alness lies Evanton, a popular village with an attractive rural setting beneath Fyrish Hill. Evanton has developed into a popular residential location for people seeking countryside surroundings while retaining convenient access to Inverness, Dingwall, Alness and the wider Easter Ross area.
Further east, Ardross and the surrounding countryside provide a much more rural character, with scattered farms, crofts and country properties. The landscape becomes increasingly open and agricultural, making this part of the area particularly appealing to those looking for larger properties, land or a more rural Highland lifestyle.
To the east of Alness lies Invergordon, another important community on the Cromarty Firth.
The relationship between Alness and Invergordon is particularly important economically and geographically. Invergordon has a long industrial and maritime history, while the wider Cromarty Firth remains an important centre for energy, engineering, maritime activity and cruise tourism.
The proximity of the two towns means that residents of Alness benefit from access to the employment opportunities and services of the wider Easter Ross area.
