Pump House Crescent takes its name from the waterworks next door. The Grand Junction Waterworks Company opened its pumping station at Kew Bridge in 1838 to draw clean water from the Thames for west London, and the brick standpipe tower added in 1867 still rises over the neighbourhood as one of the last of its kind anywhere. The site is now the London Museum of Water and Steam, and Brentford has spent the years since turning from working river port into one of the more interesting corners of west London.
The day to day is close at hand. Mum's Wholefood, an independent grocer, and a Sainsbury's Local are both around five minutes on foot, while INYUN, the Korean fried chicken and coffee shop, is three. Kew Bridge station is an eight minute walk, with the Express Tavern and The Roastery alongside it.
Twelve minutes in one direction brings you to Strand on the Green, the riverside stretch of Chiswick and home to four well regarded pubs in the Steam Packet, the Bell and Crown, the City Barge and the Bull's Head. Thames Road runs parallel, with independent coffee shops, dentists and Annie's, a much loved local restaurant, along with the Strand on the Green nursery, infant and junior schools.
Fifteen minutes the other way is Brentford High Street, where an Everyman cinema, Gail's, Morrisons, Holland & Barrett and Specsavers sit alongside Rottura, the family run Italian restaurant in the new riverside development, and the Duke of London wine bar and classic car showroom. The Black Dog Beer House is a similar walk.
Kew Green and the entrance to Kew Gardens are approximately fifteen minutes away, and the A4 and M4 give quick access west and towards Heathrow.
