Description

Part of our Signature collection, an exceptional converted church offering extensive characterful accommodation including an indoor swimming pool and garage with studio/annexe in a village setting 4 miles to the east of Colchester.

Originally converted in 1981 from the 1907 St. Paul’s Chapel of Ease, Church House offers flexible living accommodation with further potential to reconfigure and modernise.

Double oak entrance doors open to a vestibule with further door leading through to the double height reception hall with pine herringbone wood block flooring and staircase that ascends to the galleried landing. The wood block flooring flows through to the 4th bedroom or study with vaulted ceiling and suspended storage platform with pull down ladder access. Also off the hall is a bathroom with bath and shower above, toilet, bidet and washstand with basin. Next to the bathroom is a utility with ample storage.
At the rear is the substantial pool room with a triple aspect including many of the original stained glass leaded lights. The swimming pool measures 30’ x 16’ with cupboard housing the boiler and pump equipment. Steps lead down through double doors to a rear hall with a shower room and original double doors leading out to a south facing conservatory with French doors out to the gardens.

Stairs lead up from the hall to a galleried landing which links the kitchen to the rest of the accommodation, enjoying a high timbered vaulted ceiling. The kitchen has a superb original window with some of the stained glass leaded light features. There is a central island with stainless steel sink and drainer with cupboards beneath and further tiled worksurfaces over cupboard and drawer units with matching wall mounted cupboards. Appliances include a double oven and electric hob with space for additional appliances.

A stunning brick archway with glazed screen leads through to the vaulted sitting room with timbered ceiling and large beams and king post roof truss with Velux roof windows to either side. Character features include the communion rail running across the room and pine block wood flooring. Stairs ascend to the pulpit which overlooks the main sitting room with a mezzanine with built in shelving and storage cupboards.

Leading off the sitting room is the bedroom wing. The principal bedroom makes the most of the two western facing church windows which overlook countryside with part stained glass leaded lights. On one side of the room is a vanity unit with storage and two inset wash basins and a walk-in shower. On the other side is a walk-in wardrobe. There are two further bedrooms with Velux roof windows and a cloakroom with toilet, bidet and wash basin.

Outside
At the front of church house are extensive lawns with shingle drive leading through to a courtyard area with ample parking where you will find the detached double garage with storage room and sun room facing south to the rear. An external door leads to a hall with stairs ascending to the first floor studio room with a bedroom and former bathroom all requiring modernisation.
At the side of the building is a lawned area with access through a wall via a gate which sweeps round to the rear with further lawns and hedging to the rear and mature trees.
