The Courtyard is a four-bedroom home with lower ground floor apartment within the walls of Grade II* listed Thurland Castle. Set beside the moat in the Lune Valley, it brings together the character of the castle and the ease of a thoughtfully updated home. Leaded windows, stone details and views across the grounds give the rooms a strong sense of place, while the layout offers flexibility for family life and visiting guests.

The approach begins at the castle gates. A tree-lined drive crosses the moat before passing beneath the stone archway and continuing to The Courtyard's own gated entrance. The sense of history is immediate, yet the home itself feels welcoming and easy to settle into.

The entrance hall opens towards the principal living rooms, with a cloakroom conveniently placed for guests. Oak stairs lead to the first floor, and a lift installed by the current owners provides direct access to the master bedroom. It is a considered addition that allows the home to adapt to changing needs.

The kitchen and dining room has space for a generous table, making it a natural centre for meals with family and friends. A breakfast bar and central island provide places for a quick coffee or conversation while supper is being prepared. The gas fire brings warmth to the room on cooler evenings.

The kitchen is well equipped, with a Neff induction hob, Miele extractor, Bosch cooking appliances, Samsung fridge freezer and dishwasher. Marble-effect worktops sit alongside the island's timber surface, bringing a pleasing mix of finishes. A utility area provides another sink and worktop, as well as space for a washing machine and dryer.

Adjoining the kitchen, the garden room offers somewhere quieter to sit. Its window seats look out across the moat and surrounding landscape, inviting you to linger over breakfast or spend an afternoon reading. The room remains connected to the kitchen, so it can feel part of a gathering while offering a little space of its own.

Two sitting rooms provide more choice in how to spend time at home. Both open onto the terrace, allowing the rooms and outdoor seating area to work together in warmer weather. The first enjoys light from the front and rear, while views towards the moat keep the castle's setting present throughout the day. Mullioned surrounds and leaded windows lend character to both rooms; electric fires and underfloor heating across the ground floor add comfort.

An inner hall with heraldic etched windows leads to the fourth bedroom. Currently arranged as an office, it has a storage cupboard and its own en-suite shower room. It could serve equally well as a guest bedroom, offering visitors privacy without placing them far from the heart of the home.

Upstairs, the master bedroom has fitted wardrobes and room for a super king-size bed with additional furniture. Doors open onto a roof terrace with views of the castle, creating a private place to enjoy the surroundings. The lift opens directly into this room. Its en-suite bathroom includes a bath, twin basins, a WC and bidet, with a heated floor and towel radiator.

A second double bedroom overlooks the grounds and features wall panelling. The third bedroom, currently arranged as a single, has fitted wardrobes and a Juliet balcony. It could also become a dressing room or accommodate a double bed if required. These bedrooms share a Jack and Jill bathroom with a freestanding bath, walk-in shower and heated floor.

The lower ground floor adds another layer of flexibility. With its own wet room and access to a private courtyard, it could become a cinema room, gym or accommodation for guests. An oak door leads towards the moat, giving this more secluded part of the home a close connection to the castle grounds.

The Courtyard has a double garage and access to approximately 10 acres of shared landscaped grounds. Paths beside the moat and mature trees offer room to wander, while a shared tennis court adds another way to enjoy the setting. Closer to home, the terrace and private courtyard provide places for outdoor dining or a quiet morning coffee.

The castle stands near the village of Tunstall, surrounded by the fields and gentle contours of the Lune Valley. Kirkby Lonsdale is approximately 4.6 miles away, close enough for everyday errands or an unhurried lunch. Its independent shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs sit alongside a weekly market and Booths supermarket. The town also offers much to explore on foot. A walk from its historic streets leads to Ruskin's View, looking out across the River Lune, while a riverside path continues towards the medieval Devil's Bridge. It is easy to spend an afternoon here before returning to the quieter surroundings of the castle. Beyond Kirkby Lonsdale, the Yorkshire Dales invite longer days outside. Ingleton is a destination for waterfall walks and a gateway to the limestone landscape around Ingleborough. The Lake District and Forest of Bowland are also within reach, offering a wide choice of scenery and routes to explore.

Originally a medieval manor house, Thurland Castle was fortified under Sir Thomas Tunstall in the early 15th century. Later changes and a substantial 19th-century reconstruction shaped the building seen today.
At The Courtyard, history is woven into daily life. It is there in the journey across the moat, the detail of the windows and the outlook from its rooms. The Courtyard, creates a home that can accommodate guests and adapt to the pace of everyday life.

About AshdownJones, The Lakes and Lune Valley

1C Low Cleabarrow Business Centre Windermere Cumbria LA23 3FA

Hey,

Nice to 'meet' you! We're Sam Ashdown and Phil Jones, founders of AshdownJones - a bespoke estate agency specialising in selling unique homes in The Lake District and Lune Valley.

We love a challenge...

Over the last eighteen years we have helped sell over 1000 unique and special homes, all with their very own story to tell, all with their unique challenges.

Our distinctive property marketing services are not right for every home, but those clients we do help consistently sell quicker, and for a higher price.

If you have a unique home in The Lake District or The Dales, lets put some time in the diary to have a chat. Within an hour (or possibly two), you'll have a clear picture of how we could help you sell your home for the price you want, in the timescale you need. You may not be considering selling right now, and that's cool with us, having all the information will help you make the right decisions for you and your families.

After all, the right advice, at the right time, makes all the difference.

Selling property is what most estate agents do; changing people's lives takes longer, but it's what we at AshdownJones do. Moving house will change your life, and we want to be a part of that change, helping you every step of the way.

Let's have a chat over a cup of tea (preferably Yorkshire) and talk about what's best for you.

Sam, Phil and The AJ Team
