Isle Of Wiay, Creagorry, Benbecula, Eilean Siar, HS7

A private and accessible island extending to about 970 acres, lying just off the east coast of Benbecula with sandy beaches, sheltered anchorage, Jacobite history, stalking and fishing and an abundance of wildlife.

Situated off the coast of Benbecula, the Isle of Wiay occupies an enviable position at the heart of the Outer Hebrides, offering a rare combination of privacy, natural beauty and historical significance.

Once home to a small crofting community, the island still bears evidence of its former inhabitants. The ruins of a cottage remain overlooking Bagh na Murla, a sheltered bay on the western shore. Planning consent was previously granted for the renovation of the cottage, although this consent has now lapsed.

Predominantly low-lying, Wiay rises to its highest point, Beinn a' Tuath, at 335 feet above sea level. Several freshwater lochs are scattered across the island, providing excellent opportunities for fishing and sporting pursuits. Combined with its beautiful sandy beaches, sheltered anchorages and complete tranquillity, the island offers an exceptional private retreat. The remote and unspoilt landscape also supports an abundance of wildlife, including both golden eagles and white-tailed sea eagles, which have been recorded nesting on the island. In the past the island has supported about 200 sheep with good grazing on the lower slopes.

Wiay has strong Jacobite associations. In 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie is said to have sought refuge on the island while fleeing government forces following the Battle of Culloden. A cave at the foot of Beinn a' Tuath, known locally as "Prince Charlie's Rest", is traditionally believed to have provided shelter during his escape.

Sheltered by Benbecula to the west, Wiay enjoys a truly spectacular setting. The island commands far-reaching views across the surrounding waters to Benbecula and beyond, with the dramatic Cuillin mountains of Skye visible on the eastern horizon on clear days.

The sporting rights are in hand and are included. In so far as the salmon fishings rights are part of the property title, they are including in the sale.

Wiay is part of the Uists, a chain of interconnected islands in the southern Outer Hebrides which together form one of Scotland's most distinctive island landscapes.

The island chain is renowned for its white-sand beaches, the rich machair grasslands which are amongst the rarest habitats in Europe, thousands of freshwater lochs and lochans, abundant wildlife including seals, dolphins and whales and a strong tradition of language and culture.

Balivanich on Benbecula is the closest settlement and serves as the commercial and administrative hub of the Uists. Despite its modest size, the village offers a comprehensive range of amenities including shops, supermarkets, healthcare facilities, schools, cafés and Benbecula Airport, which provides regular flights to mainland Scotland.

There are no services on the island.



The island is accessed by a short private boat charter from Peter's Port, which is connected to both Benbecula and South Uist by causeway.

The wider island chain is served by regular flights from Stornoway and Glasgow into Benbecula Airport at Balivanich, while ferry services operate to Lochboisdale in South Uist and Lochmaddy in North Uist, offering convenient links to mainland Scotland.
