Blackpool is a seaside town in Lancashire, England. It is located on the Irish Sea coast of the Fylde peninsula, approximately 27 miles (43 km) north of Liverpool and 14 miles (23 km) west of Preston. It is the main settlement in the borough of the same name. Blackpool's population was approximately 141,000 in 2021 according to census figures a fall of 0.7 per cent from the 2011 census.
***TRANSPORT***
*Air*
Blackpool Airport lies just over the borough boundary into Fylde, although a proposal to reorganise Blackpool's borders would see the airport incorporated into the Borough of Blackpool.[when?] Formerly known as Blackpool Squires Gate Airport, it is one of the oldest in the UK, having hosted public flying meetings in 1909 and 1910.
Airlines that served Blackpool before its temporary closure in late 2014 included Jet2.com and Aer Arran. It was reopened to small aircraft, after failing to find a buyer in December 2014, but scheduled flights ceased in 2017.
Access to the town by air is now via Liverpool John Lennon Airport or Manchester Airport, both approximately 40 miles (64 km) away.
*Buses and coaches*
Services are operated predominantly by the following companies:
- Blackpool Transport operates the main bus services in and around the borough
- Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire operates regional bus services, including routes to Preston, Lancaster and Garstang
- National Express operates long-distance coach services to Birmingham and London.
*Railway*
The borough is served by four railway stations:
- Blackpool North is the principal terminus. Northern Trains provides services to Liverpool Lime Street, Wigan North Western, Preston, Manchester Airport, Manchester Piccadilly, Leeds and York. Avanti West Coast operates two daily services to London Euston.
- Layton lies one stop beyond North station, with Northern Trains services to Manchester Airport, via Preston.
- Blackpool South is also a terminus station. Northern Trains operates a service to Preston, via Lytham.
- Blackpool Pleasure Beach lies one stop beyond South station, with Northern Trains services to Preston.
- Squires Gate lies just outside of the borough boundary, but serves Blackpool Airport on the line from South station.
*Road*
The M55 motorway links the town to the M6 at Preston. Other major roads in the town are the:
- A583 to Kirkham and Preston
- A584 and B5261, which both lead to Lytham St Annes
- A585 and A587 to Fleetwood
- A586 to Poulton-le-Fylde, Garstang and Lancaster.
