Description
Never judge a book by its cover. Or in this case, a bungalow by its frontage.
Because from the road, Shelley Road looks like a fairly straightforward bungalow. Nice enough, decent driveway, garage... You get the idea.
Then you walk through the door and realise there's far more going on here than you thought.
And that's really what we like about this one. It's not trying to be the fanciest bungalow in Burntwood. It hasn't had £100,000 thrown at it and been painted fifty shades of beige. What it does have is space, flexibility and bags of potential, and sometimes that's far more exciting.
You come straight into a genuinely big lounge, with a large window across the front, feature fireplace and enough room for some serious furniture without having to shuffle sideways between the sofa and the coffee table. There's even air conditioning, which sounds slightly extravagant for Staffordshire until that one week in July when everybody suddenly wishes they had it.
The kitchen is another good-sized room. Plenty of cupboards, loads of worktop space and a big range cooker, but again, there's scope here. If you're the sort of person who walks around houses mentally knocking walls down and moving kitchens about, you're probably going to have a field day with this place.
Then we get to the bedrooms, because this is where things get interesting. It's currently a two-bedroom bungalow…. But it wasn't always.
The main bedroom is huge because it was originally two separate bedrooms. At some point somebody decided they'd rather have one whopper of a bedroom than two smaller ones and, to be fair, you can see why. But if you need three bedrooms, there's an obvious opportunity to put it back to its former layout.
Bedroom two isn't exactly the short straw either. It's another really decent room, has its own air conditioning and opens directly into the conservatory.
And calling the conservatory a conservatory almost undersells it. It's currently being used as an office and there's loads of room in there, so whether you want somewhere to work, somewhere for the kids to disappear to, a hobby room or simply another place to sit, it's proper usable space rather than somewhere you just keep a clothes airer.
There's a wet room too, and together with the ramped approach to the front, this is a bungalow that already works well for somebody wanting level-access, single-storey living.
Then there's the garage. Now, you can absolutely put a car in it. But where's the fun in that?
Because when you've already got a decent driveway out front, that garage starts looking suspiciously like another room waiting to happen. Office? Snug? Bigger kitchen? Utility? Depending on what you want to do and, of course, the relevant permissions and building requirements, there's plenty to get the imagination going.
The garden follows much the same theme as the house, easy to live with. There's loads of patio, artificial lawn, established greenery and plenty of room to sit outside without sacrificing every sunny weekend to cutting grass.
And that's Shelley Road really. Don't buy it because everything has already been done for you. Buy it because there's so much you could do with it. Keep it as a big two-bed. Put it back to three. Have a look at that garage. Modernise it bit by bit. Completely change it around. The bones are here, the space is here and the flexibility is definitely here. It just needs somebody with a few ideas.
Location
Shelley Road sits in the Boney Hay side of Burntwood, and for anyone looking to make life that little bit easier, it’s a really handy spot.
One of the biggest plus points is public transport. There are bus stops around Shelley Road, Birch Terrace and Chaucer Drive, with the closest recorded stop on Chaucer Drive just a matter of yards from the postcode. From the wider Burntwood network, services connect into Lichfield, Cannock, Hednesford and Walsall, so getting about without relying on the car is very doable.
Day-to-day bits are close by too. One Stop on Parkhill Road is particularly handy for picking up the essentials, while ALDI, Lidl and Morrisons take care of the bigger weekly shop. Morrisons also has a café, petrol station and other useful services all in one place.
Healthcare is well catered for around Burntwood too, with a choice of local pharmacies including Day Night Pharmacy & Weight loss Clinic at Swan Shopping Precinct, N & J's Chemist on Morley Road and Chase Terrace Pharmacy on Rugeley Road.
And that's really what works about the location. You're tucked away on a residential road rather than sitting amongst all the hustle and bustle, but you've still got the everyday stuff, shops, pharmacies and, importantly, buses, all within easy reach.
For a bungalow that's already been designed with level access in mind, the location complements the property rather nicely.
