Description

As estate agents, we’re privileged to regularly list large and impressive homes. However, on rare occasion, a house appears that is simply extra special, that makes the others feel ordinary. Whitesands Lodge is such a house. It’s grand in scale, assured in presence, and abundantly versatile. It’s not often that an opportunity to acquire such a substantial and characterful property arises, in the highly sought after coastal village of Sennen. Extending to approximately 2,863 sq ft, Whitesands Lodge offers wonderfully spacious accommodation with six en-suite bedrooms, multiple reception spaces, and fabulous views over open countryside. This is a house built for people who need space: a large family, several generations under one roof, or simply room to live without bumping into each other. A ground-floor ensuite bedroom, currently used as the owners suite with its own separate entrance, makes that especially easy. All of this within a fifteen or so minute walk from one of Cornwall most pristine beaches – what more could anyone want?

The Property - The property immediately makes an impression with its handsome granite elevations, while inside, the accommodation is packed with character. Exposed granite walls, substantial timber beams, wooden floors and impressive fireplaces run throughout, creating a home that feels unmistakably Cornish.

At the heart of the ground floor is a generous lounge-diner with its own granite bar – who hasn’t dreamed of having their own bar? The bar sits to one side, leaving room for dining and informal seating. Beyond that, a lounge area opens under a vaulted ceiling of exposed beams and rooflights, with a floor-to-ceiling granite fireplace as the centrepiece.

There is also a separate living room, again rich in character, with exposed granite, a further substantial open fireplace and plenty of space for both comfortable seating and dining. The kitchen is positioned centrally within the ground-floor accommodation and is complemented by a large utility room, useful store and additional facilities, adding considerable practicality. At present the owner has a commercial kitchen fitted, but with the size of the room there is much potential for any future buyer to refit in any style as they see fit.

One of the ground-floor rooms is currently arranged as a owners suite, complete with its own shower room/WC, separate front door and private garden area, providing useful flexibility for guests or those looking for predominantly ground-floor accommodation.

Upstairs, the property offers five further ensuite bedrooms. Exposed granite continues to feature prominently, while windows frame attractive outlooks across the surrounding countryside and towards the ocean in the distance.

The Outdoor Space - Outside, Whitesands Lodge continues to impress. The property occupies a good size plot with gardens, seating areas and gravelled space, providing room for outdoor entertaining and parking for multiple vehicles. Mature planting and traditional Cornish stone boundaries complement the granite exterior, while the open rural surroundings to the front give the property a wonderful sense of space.

Perhaps one of its greatest assets is its setting. From the house there are far-reaching views across neighbouring fields towards the surrounding West Cornwall countryside, yet the property remains within Sennen, one of Cornwall's most sought-after coastal locations and within easy reach of its spectacular coastline and renowned sandy beach.

The Location - Sennen is the last proper village before the map runs out. Up on the A30 you have the church, the school, the shop and the First and Last Inn. A short drop later you are in Sennen Cove: harbour, lifeboat station, and Whitesand Bay rolling north in a mile of pale sand. Live here and the Atlantic is not a weekend treat. It is the backdrop to the school run.

The beach, every day

Whitesand Bay is why people stay. It is wide, pale and simply picturesque. On a quiet morning you can walk it before anyone else is up. In season RNLI lifeguards mark the safer swimming water; on calmer days the bay is one of the better family swims on this coast. When the swell is up it is one of Cornwall’s most reliable surf beaches, forgiving enough for beginners and still worth the paddle for people who know what they are doing. Two long-standing schools — Sennen Surfing Centre and Smart Surf School — sit in the village, which tells you this is not a borrowed lifestyle. It is local. Gwynver, just along the bay, is the quieter sister. Low tide links the two. Dogs have a seasonal ban on the main beach in high summer; the rest of the year, and the coast path, remain wide open.

Walks that start at the door

The South West Coast Path does not just visit Sennen. It goes through it. South, the cliff path to Land’s End is about a mile and among the best short walks in the county: granite, Longships lighthouse, and on a clear evening a hint of the Isles of Scilly. Keep going and you reach Nanjizal — sea cave, tidal pool, seals if you are lucky. North takes you towards Cape Cornwall and a wilder, less photographed stretch of Penwith. These are not “days out.” They are Tuesday evenings.

A village that still works as a village

Sennen is small, not empty. In the Cove you have the Old Success Inn on the water, cafés by the lifeboat station, fish and chips, a beach restaurant, the Old Boathouse stores, galleries including the Round House, and a working harbour. Up in the village: Costcutter with a post office, more chips, the First and Last, the community hall, and a Tuesday farmers’ market behind the school that is good enough to plan the week around. Gig rowing, surf cadets, yoga, youth club — the halls are used, not decorative. It’s an open and thriving community all year round, not just during the summer like some places.

St Just is about four miles (Co-op, butcher, pharmacy, everyday high street). Penzance is eight or nine: Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Newlyn fish, GPs, pharmacies, and the train if you need the rest of the country. That is the deal here. Daily life is local. Bigger life is a short, scenic drive.

Schools

Sennen Community Primary Academy sits in the village and is rated Good, with nursery through to 11. Secondary choices sit in a sensible ring: Cape Cornwall School in St Just (Good, 11–16) is the closest; Humphry Davy and Mounts Bay Academy in Penzance are the next step, with Truro and Penwith College for sixth form. It is a small-school childhood with proper town options when children get older.

When you do go out

Land’s End is a walk. The Minack Theatre and Porthcurno are about four miles. St Michael’s Mount, Mousehole and Newlyn sit on the way to Penzance. St Ives is half an hour when you want galleries and a different harbour. None of this requires a holiday mindset. You live at the western edge and dip into the rest of West Penwith when you choose.
