Description

18th century upper townhouse in cobbled street opposite St Salvator’s Chapel

Description

10 College Street is an “upper townhouse” which dates from the 18th century. It has had many modifications over time including a recent refurbishment when the property was upgraded with works including a new kitchen, modern shower room and redecoration.

The property has its own front door at first floor level which is reached from a curving, covered outside stairs.

The stairs open into a hall with a cupboard containing the hot water tank. Off this is a sitting room with tripartite windows looking over the street below, a window seat and wooden wall panelling. Off the sitting room is bedroom 1 which has a built-in wardrobe.

The kitchen has just been replaced with new floor and wall cupboards, and fully integrated appliances including an oven, hob, fridge and Neff dishwasher and washing machine.

Narrow stairs lead up to the second floor where there is a bedroom with Dormer window, shower room with WC and washbasin. On this floor there is also a study with wooden wall panelling and Velux window, a room that has also been used previously as a 3rd bedroom for guests.

Location

College Street is an iconic traffic free cobbled lane with a prime setting in central St Andrews.

It is opposite St Salvator’s Chapel in North Street with St Salvator’s Quadrangle, where many University functions take place, and the University Library adjacent. The University of St Andrews is one of the oldest in Britain (founded in 1413) and many other University buildings are arranged to either side.

All the shops, pubs and restaurants in North Street, South Street and Market Street are close at hand. Market Street is immediately to the south where the historic Whyte Melville Memorial Fountain has recently returned to operation following a restoration project funded by the St Andrews Pilgrim Foundation.

The property is 200 yards from The Scores which is the cliff top street leading to the R&A Clubhouse and West Sands Beach. St Andrews is renowned worldwide as the Home of Golf. There are now eight golf courses under the management of the St Andrews Links Trust. The Old Course is arguably the most famous golf course in the world and next plays host to the Open Championship in 2027.

The historic town has a good range of shops, hotels, restaurants, recreational and cultural facilities which include The Byre Theatre. Beyond St Andrews is the East Neuk of Fife, with a spectacular coastline which boasts fishing villages built around picturesque harbours and sandy unspoilt beaches.

Access to St Andrews by rail, road and air is good. Leuchars railway station (8 miles) is on the main Aberdeen to London line and provides a link to Dundee and Edinburgh. Edinburgh Airport, with a wide range of domestic and international flights, is 50 miles away and Dundee Airport is 15 miles.
