Description

Step Inside
The Retreat is a wonderfully individual country home offering generous, characterful accommodation and exceptional versatility for modern family life. The principal house provides approximately 3,789 sq ft of space, with substantial living areas offering plenty of scope for entertaining, working from home and relaxed everyday living. See What truly distinguishes the property, however, is the addition of two separate cottages, currently utilised for Airbnb accommodation. These create an exciting opportunity to continue an established holiday-let offering, but their flexibility extends far beyond income generation. They could equally provide independent accommodation for extended family, grown-up children or guests, facilitate multigenerational living, or lend themselves to a home business or workspace, subject to any necessary consents. With enormous potential to adapt and evolve around its next owners, The Retreat offers a rare opportunity to create a very individual lifestyle property and is offered with no onward chain.

Step Outside
The setting is central to the appeal of The Retreat, offering the space, greenery and slower pace associated with country living while remaining remarkably convenient for Cardiff, Caerphilly and Newport. The grounds provide a wonderful backdrop to the main house and cottages, allowing each element of the property to contribute to a lifestyle that could combine family life, entertaining, working from home and holiday accommodation. The outdoor areas offer considerable scope for new owners to personalise and enhance the setting further, whether creating areas for alfresco dining, relaxation or simply enjoying the surrounding countryside. The separation between the principal residence and additional accommodation is particularly valuable, allowing the cottages to function independently when required while remaining close enough to work perfectly for extended family. For buyers looking beyond a conventional family home, this is a property with the space and flexibility to create something genuinely special.

Location
Rudry offers an appealing rural village lifestyle while sitting conveniently between Caerphilly and Cardiff, with Caerphilly only around three miles away. The area combines countryside and woodland with local amenities including the Maenllwyd Inn Rudry and nearby golf and leisure facilities. Families have access to local schooling as well as leading independent schools across Cardiff, including The Cathedral School, Howell's and St John's College. Road connections provide access towards the M4, Cardiff, Newport and Bristol, while nearby rail connections provide onward services to Cardiff Central and direct mainline trains to London Paddington. The combination makes Rudry particularly attractive to those seeking a country lifestyle without feeling disconnected from the city.

Vendor Insight:
It was the beautiful rural setting, tucked into forest yet well connected to villages, towns and Cardiff, that drew us to The Retreat,” say the owners of this detached residence with additional accommodation and extensive grounds. “We’ve lived in the main house and let the attached cottage as a very successful holiday rental, providing a good income and five-star reviews.”

Since moving in, the owners have made several improvements to the property, which was originally built in the 1780s and later extended. “We’ve recently replaced the conservatory, installed a new wet room, and updated a bathroom in the main house. The two dwellings are connected by an internal door, which we have temporarily closed off while using the cottage as a holiday let. When it was open, it worked perfectly for multigenerational living and could easily be set up this way again,” they explain. They add that the wooden outbuilding backing onto the tennis court has an office and kitchenette downstairs, with a bedroom, bathroom, and living area upstairs. “This is a very handy space.” The building also provides undercover parking.

This is an excellent property for enjoying an outdoor lifestyle, and there’s much to appreciate about the garden and surrounding area. “We’ve done a lot to develop the garden and orchard, from clearing and planting new beds to creating a stone seating area around the stream, designed for tranquil moments in nature. With the sound of two streams – and an oxbow lake – babbling nearby, and abundant birdlife in the trees, the environment is truly enchanting. We often spot herons and kingfishers, and the bottom stream, which lies within the boundary of the property, even hosts trout.” With two BBQ areas and a large deck, the outdoor space is perfect for outdoor entertaining.

The area is popular with visitors for a variety of reasons, as the owners explain. “Many of our cottage guests come for the excellent local fishing, horse riding, hiking, mountain biking, and golf, while also taking full advantage of everything Cardiff has to offer, from museums and sporting fixtures to restaurants and live music venues.” They add, “Although The Retreat is secluded, it’s only a 15-minute walk to the local pub, where locals gather on a Friday evening to share a drink. All other amenities, like doctors, shops and takeaways, are located in nearby villages.”

“We’ll miss everything about living here, especially the gentle sound of the stream and the absolute peace and quiet.”
