Description

Set on the south side of Bath in popular Entry Hill, Dorchester Lodge is a substantial detached Victorian house dating from around 1850.

The house has a long and interesting history. It was used as a nursing home during the late 19th century, while former Mayor of Bath James Sidney Carpenter lived here in the early 1900s and personally welcomed Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia to the city during his mayoral term.

Set in approximately one-third of an acre, the property boasts impressive proportions, high ceilings, a wealth of original features and generous gardens. It also offers excellent scope for updating.

‘Our parents bought the house in 1966 because the size of the house and garden made it perfect for our very large family,’ say the owners. ‘It was also within walking distance of good schools, the local church and the city centre.’ Arranged over two floors, the house has a large entrance hall, three reception rooms, fifth bedroom/study with en suite wet room and a kitchen on the ground floor, with four bedrooms, bathroom and separate WC upstairs. A lower-ground-floor cellar provides useful additional space, currently used as a workshop.

The staircase is undoubtedly the house’s defining feature, rising through the centre of the hallway with hanging balconies and allowing you to walk all the way around it. ‘Everyone who visits comments on how striking and unusual it is.’ Other period details include marble fireplaces, brass door furniture and ornate cornices, while improvements made by the owners include a new boiler and a renovated kitchen.

The garden is particularly generous for a Bath property, with a natural spring running through it and mature greenery creating a wonderfully private setting. 'The sound of the water running through the garden is incredibly relaxing.’ A driveway provides parking for four cars alongside the detached double garage.
Within easy reach of Bath city centre, the house is around a 25-minute walk from Bath Spa station, with direct trains to Bristol and London. Local schools, shops and amenities are close by, while The Packhorse pub at Southstoke and a local café are both within walking distance.

‘It’s a great area and we have had many wonderful neighbours over the years, several becoming lifelong friends.’

‘The house has been at the centre of our family life for 60 years. So much has happened here, so many family events, we're going to miss it.'
