Originally built in 1850 by the Powell Duffryn mining company for the local mining community, the property retains a wonderful connection to its heritage, whilst the 1970s extension provides generous, versatile accommodation for modern living. The original front of the house adds to its charm, with the accommodation offering a natural balance of character and practicality. Generous reception spaces create an inviting environment for both relaxed family life and entertaining, whilst the kitchen provides a practical heart to the home, complete with a double oven. Throughout, there is a lovely sense of personality and warmth, with flexible spaces that could adapt beautifully to family life, working from home or hosting guests. This is a home that feels established, welcoming and wonderfully individual, with its history forming an integral part of its appeal.

Step Outside
Outside, Graig yr Allt feels like a world of its own. Set within approximately three quarters of an acre, the property is surrounded by mature greenery and established planting, creating an exceptional sense of privacy and seclusion. Despite being conveniently positioned for everyday life, the setting feels remarkably removed from it, with birdsong and abundant wildlife providing the soundtrack rather than traffic. The gardens are beautifully established and offer a wonderful variety of spaces to relax and entertain, with extensive decking and double-decked areas creating the perfect setting for summer gatherings. A charming rockery incorporates original mining rock, providing a tangible connection to the property’s history and the community for which it was built. The combination of mature gardens, generous outdoor space and complete privacy creates an enchanting setting that feels almost hidden in plain sight. A truly magical exterior to accompany an equally characterful home.

Vendor Insight:
“We fell in love with the history, character and wonderful sense of privacy,” say the owners of Graig Yr Allt Cottage. “It’s a unique home, tucked away with so much space and tranquillity while still feeling connected to the local community.”

Set at the end of a 140m private lane, the stone-built cottage was constructed in 1857 by Dyffryn Powell Mining Company, then the largest coal mining company in South Wales, to house migrant workers. “Originally a two-up, two-down cottage, it was substantially extended to the rear in the 1970s,” the owners say. “We’ve always loved the cottage aspect and its history.” When making further updates, they say, “The floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors leading to the patio were a deliberate choice, allowing us to bring as much natural light into the rooms as possible and create a real connection with the garden.”

Arranged over two floors, the five-bedroom cottage offers plenty of space and flexibility. “One of our favourite rooms is the sitting and dining area, where we can comfortably seat eight people for dinner. The adjoining snug and kitchen are also brilliant family spaces.” The kitchen leads into the utility area, which houses a double sink, washing machine and tumble dryer, as well as plenty of storage. An attic room provides useful additional space.

Outside, the property occupies a 0.75-acre plot surrounded by mature trees, shrubs and borders, with a private wooded area to the rear. A large patio leads into the garden, which has rockeries, raised decking areas and a dry-stone boundary wall. “The garden is a wonderful habitat for birds, butterflies, squirrels and owls, and we’ve even seen the occasional bird of prey. We love sitting and watching the wildlife through the windows.” The garden is also perfect for entertaining, with space for summer barbecues and evenings around a fire pit.

“Bryn Siriol is a lovely place to live,” they say. “It’s quiet and peaceful, but the neighbours are very friendly and sociable, and there’s a real sense of community. There’s a local shop, butcher, pub and community centre, while Ystrad Mynach is only around seven minutes away.” Rail links are within two miles, with Cardiff and the M4 easily accessible.

“We’ll miss the peace, tranquillity, privacy and space most of all,” they reflect. “This has been such a special home for raising our family, and we feel very fortunate to have experienced all it has had to offer.”

Agents Note: A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is in place on the trees surrounding Graig yr Allt. The property does not own the private access lane leading to the house; however, it benefits from full access, with no known restrictions on access.
