Description

Designed by Coupdeville Architects, this two bedroom house over three floors stands on Godolphin Road in Shepherd’s Bush. It is one of a short terrace of contemporary homes. Coupdeville built contextually. The façade is reclaimed London stock brick with black aluminium-framed windows. It is set in the same proportions as the late-Victorian terraces around it and recalls the street’s earlier industrial use.

Inside, the front door opens onto an open-plan living room with a strong sense of colour and well-chosen materials. The kitchen is by British Standard by Plain English. It runs along the rear wall in cabinetry painted deep olive green with timber worktops. A tall larder cupboard and a full run of drawers and cupboards give a great deal of storage for a kitchen of this size. White tongue-and-groove panelling rises above a green-painted splashback. An etched-glass window above the sink softens the light from the back of the house.

At the front, tall windows light the dining area and look out onto the street. There is room for a table seating six and a comfortable living area between the dining table and the kitchen. Oak flooring runs throughout the ground floor. Light from both ends of the room keeps it bright through the day.

The staircase is the defining element of the house. Oak treads climb in a sawtooth line along a wall of white tongue-and-groove panelling. Flush doors are set into the panelling beneath and open onto a utility and a pantry under the stairs. The stair is carpeted in a handmade crimson runner that carries colour up through the house.

Up the staircase, the first floor has a double bedroom currently used as a study. One wall is lined with oak-veneered joinery from floor to ceiling. Full-height doors open onto two walk-in wardrobes, with an inset black shelf for books and objects between them. A large window looks across the street to the brick villas opposite. Across the landing is the bathroom, tiled in white metro tiles with a terracotta and cream chequerboard floor. There is a bath with an overhead rain shower and a tall chrome heated towel rail.

The staircase continues to the second floor, where a roof light illuminates the landing. The principal bedroom takes up most of this floor beneath the pitch of the roof. A full-width window fills it with light through the day and looks out over chimney stacks and slate rooftops. The room feels set above the neighbourhood and open to the sky. The walls are painted a deep slate blue. A walk-in wardrobe lined in oak provides generous storage and an en suite shower room fits neatly under the slope of the ceiling.

Godolphin Road is within easy reach of the independent shops and restaurants of Askew Road. Laveli Bakery is a favourite among locals. On Uxbridge Road, Next Door Records is a vinyl shop and café that hosts live music in the evenings. The Eagle and its garden are a short walk away and Shepherd’s Bush Market is close by. For open space there’s Ravenscourt Park and Wendell Park.

Shepherd’s Bush has a long history in film, television and music. Alfred Hitchcock filmed The 39 Steps at the nearby Lime Grove Studios, which the BBC later took over. Frank Matcham’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire was the BBC Television Theatre for four decades before reopening as a music venue in 1994. The Bush Theatre programmes new writing in the former Passmore Edwards library on Uxbridge Road.

Goldhawk Road and Shepherd’s Bush Market stations are within walking distance. Both have Hammersmith & City and Circle line services to Paddington and King’s Cross. Shepherd’s Bush station has the Central line to Notting Hill Gate and Oxford Circus as well as the Overground. Several bus routes run into central London.
