Description

Every coaching inn ran on hay. The teams of horses that pulled the stage coaches, the post horses hired out along the valley and the cattle brought in for market all had to be fed — and that meant a great store of hay, gathered in summer to last through the long northern winter.

In the farmyards and inn yards of the North, that hay was kept up high in the loft of a barn, safe and dry above the animals below. Each summer, carts piled high from the hay meadows of the Lune Valley would draw into the yard, and the hay would be pitched up by hand through a loft door, ready to be forked down to the stalls as it was needed.

Hayloft Barn takes its name from that heritage — the quiet, fragrant heart of a working inn yard, where The Old Stables kept the horses and The Old Shippon housed the cattle. Where hay once filled the rafters, there are now light-filled bedrooms, and the solid stone walls that kept a winter's harvest dry now wrap around a warm and welcoming home.

The whole ground floor is given over to one wonderful open-plan kitchen, dining and living space — a home built for gathering, with doors to the outside and windows on three sides drawing in light throughout the day. At one end, the kitchen is designed for real life, with a generous run of units, integrated appliances and a breakfast peninsula separating the cooking space from the rest of the room. A table beneath the window makes a lovely spot for morning coffee. Beyond, the living area has room for a large corner sofa and a dedicated media wall, while the dining area offers space for a round table for six beside the window — perfect for family meals, Sunday lunches and long evenings with friends. A practical side door makes coming and going easy, whether you are back from a walk by the Wenning or carrying in the shopping.

The staircase rises to the first floor, where three bedrooms sit beneath the rooftops — just where the hay would once have been stored. The principal bedroom is a generous double with a wall of fitted storage and its own en-suite shower room. Bedrooms One and Two each have fitted storage and make ideal rooms for children, guests or a home office. The family bathroom has a full-size bath for slow, relaxing soaks, with a basin and WC, finished in keeping with the boutique style found throughout the Castle Inn homes.

For centuries, the hayloft kept the Castle Inn going through the winter. Hayloft Barn invites you to bring it to life once more — and make it home.

Life in Hornby ...

Hornby is one of the Lune Valley's loveliest villages, with the River Wenning flowing through it and Hornby Castle rising above. Across the road stands St Margaret's Church with its unusual octagonal tower, and the Main Street is lined with Georgian houses and stone cottages.
Lancaster lies around nine miles away and Kirkby Lonsdale around eight, with regular bus links to both and to Ingleton. The Forest of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District are all within easy reach — endless walks, cycle rides and country pubs on your doorstep, and a quiet village to come home to.

Four centuries at the heart of Hornby ...

Hornby was laid out as a planned market town in the thirteenth century, and the Castle Inn has always stood at its very centre — facing the old market place and the gates of Hornby Castle, whose story stretches back to a medieval pele tower. One of the castle's most famous owners, Sir Edward Stanley, fought at Flodden in 1513 and was made Lord Monteagle for his courage.
There has been an inn on this site since at least the late 1500s, when it was kept by Henry Chatburn, a local linen merchant and deputy bailiff of the Hornby Castle Estate. When the turnpike road arrived in the 1750s, the inn's fortunes rose with it, and the handsome Georgian building you see today took shape: squared sandstone, chamfered quoins, slate roof and elegant sash windows.
This was a coaching inn in the truest sense. Stage coaches between Lancaster and Kirkby Lonsdale halted here, and local tradition holds that passengers riding on the roof could step straight into the inn through an upper door ra...
