Description
The Ground Floor
The hallway sets the tone for the rest of the house. It is painted in Farrow & Ball Shadow White, with a woodblock-design Karndean floor that gives it warmth and a sense of character from the moment you step inside. The decoration is neutral throughout, so a new owner can move straight in or add their own colour over time. To the front, a sitting room with a bay window and a feature fireplace could also make a good study or playroom. A cloakroom sits off the hall, finished to the same high standard as the bathrooms upstairs.
The kitchen breakfast room is the working heart of the house, and at over twenty feet long it has space for the whole family. The flooring changes here to a paler Karndean, which keeps the room light and copes easily with muddy boots and school bags. A large range cooker takes centre stage, with an integrated fridge, dishwasher and a generous run of wall and base units. There is plenty of room for a breakfast table and a freestanding fridge freezer, and a door opens to the side of the house for bringing in shopping or stepping out to the bins.
The spacious lounge and dining room are open plan and span the whole width of the house. With new carpets, and a pale, elegant colour scheme, there are plenty of options for how you could furnish and enjoy the space. Patio doors and two windows bring in lovely natural light and there are stunning views of the countryside beyond. A feature fireplace creates a cosy atmosphere, while the dining room has plenty of room for a proper table. Its is the kind of room that works well for a Sunday lunch, for family Christmas celebrations, or for a quiet evening in.
The First Floor
Upstairs there are four double bedrooms., and a split level landing gives the house real character. The two rear bedrooms have those gorgeous views of the rear garden and countryside beyond. It is the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night, and it changes with every season. The principal bedroom has fitted wardrobes along one wall and a lovely en suite with a bath and shower over. Next door, the large second bedroom easily takes a double bed and a full set of furniture. Both rooms have been decorated in relaxing neutral tones, with soft carpets underfoot.
Bedrooms three and four sit at the front of the house, and the fourth has built-in storage. Both are good size doubles. The family bathroom is spacious with a corner bath, a generous shower, and a handy basin and vanity unit. It also benefits from underfloor heating.
The house sits on a quiet cul-de-sac, with access only for this house and 2 neighbours coming home. At the front, a very large block-paved driveway takes five cars with ease and leads to a detached double garage. One garage door is electric, operated by remote control. The front garden has been kept low-maintenance, with decorative stone softened by mature shrubs, and a side path and gate leads through to the back.
The rear garden faces south and gets the sun for most of the day. It is laid out in three tiers. The top tier has a patio and a lawn, and this is where the views really open up. Sit out here with a morning coffee and the countryside fills the horizon. Below, two further tiers are finished in decorative stone. Tucked into one corner is a raised deck, which is the natural place for long summer evenings and meals outside.
The Area
Bassaleg has a reputation that goes before it, and the schools are much of the reason. Bassaleg School, one of the most sought-after secondary schools in the area, is within walking distance. A footpath opposite the house takes you to Pentrepoeth Primary, which means many families here do the school run on foot.
Tredegar House and its parkland are close by for weekend walks, and the canal towpaths and woodland around Fourteen Locks in Rogerstone are only a few minutes further. The Friendly Fox is just around the corner, as is the Ruperra Inn. Newport city centre is a short drive away.
Getting around is easy. Junction 28 of the M4 is minutes from the door, which puts Cardiff and Bristol within comfortable commuting distance. Rogerstone station on the Ebbw Vale line connects to Cardiff and Newport, and Newport's mainline station has direct services to London Paddington.
