It has a reputation as a 'new' town, but Basingstoke dates back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, and there's evidence of its Roman occupation on the River Loddon's northern bank.
The modern town has expanded considerably since the 1960s, and is one of the fastest growing in Hampshire. Recent years have also seen extensive redevelopment and the building of the Anvil concert hall, with its outstanding acoustics.

Now one of the region's premier leisure destinations, the town has 200 shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, a 10-screen cinema, sports centre, library and nightclub to keep visitors entertained by day and night.
The "Top of Town" is Basingstoke's historic heart, housing the Willis Museum in the former Town Hall. This is also where the weekly market, featured in the Domesday Book, is held.
This place is an economic hub, with many industries including pharmaceuticals, IT, insurance and electronics companies choosing to have bases here.
Big names like the AA, De La Rue and Sun Life Financial of Canada, among others, have made the town their home. With soaring skyscrapers dominating the industrial area, you could almost be in Canary Wharf!
Live in Basingstoke and you could commute to Reading, London, Winchester, Southampton or Oxford. The South Western mainline railway runs through the centre of town, and the fastest train to London Waterloo takes just 44 minutes.
The area is well-served by regular buses from Stagecoach, both across and outside the borough. An extensive cycle network has also been developed, while Southampton's airport is just 25 miles away. For roads, Basingstoke is at Junctions 6 and 7 of the M3, linking it to London, Southampton and the South-West.
Basingstoke has taken more than its fair share of stick over the years. But the modern-day town is likely to be different from any perceptions you may have of it. With so much going for the town today, it's no wonder that the, 'Basingstoke - A Place to be Proud of' campaign run by a local paper proved so successful.
